"Popping" caliche

I was told by one of my gardening friends about a procedure being used for making caliche more amenable as, well as dirt.
Caliche is placed in an oven, don't know the temp, and baked until it "pops". Similar to those pop rock candies was the description.
I have so far been unable to find verification of the process. Does anyone have any idea? My wife refuses to bake caliche until we find out for sure.
Thanks for the help.
