SmileNew at Gardening/First time here

Hello all this is my first time here and am new to gardening. Iam looking for some plants to add to my shabby looking yard. I dont have any plants (yet) to swap, but a friend of mine told me this might be a good site to get my garden started. I am looking for any plants that will grow good in Conroe TX.

Hi!

Do you have shade and would you like to have a plant that is a Silver and green leaf. It the fall it puts out a finger tip pale yellow flower. It is a ground cover that likes its feet wet.

Let me know.

Welcome!

Im in OKC so I know some of the plants that you can grow in your area. Tell us about your space and what kind of things you like-foliage, flowers, vines, trees, houseplants, bushes, etc. Or you can just cruise the profiles of people to see what they have to swap. We all like to chat too!

Still learning

Hello to all, and thanks for the replies. To tell you a little about my yard i am on 3 1/2 acres with shad and sun, my back yard is sunny because we have a pool and my front has most of my shad because of the big oak trees we have. I do have shrubs planted in the front of the house but thats pretty much it. I am making some flower beds around some of the tress i have and plan on making one along the back and sides of the house. I also want to make a butterfly garden since i see so many in my neighbors yard. Oh and i really love roses so i wanna see if i can grow some. Ok wish me luck and any advice you can give me please do. and if you have plants you wanna send i would love that

There is a great book to which you can refer. "Plants for Houston and the Gulf Coast" is a new book by Howard Garrett. He has a similar one for the Metroplex: "Plants of the Metroplex". Then there is "Plants for Texas", "Herbs for Texas", and the "Texas Bug Book". These are all quite handy!

I find the butterflies love my zinnias the best-so I grow all kinds, colors and sizes of them. Of course, Tx is alot like Oklahoma in flowers-I think your a zone 8 and I'm a 7-so there are lots of options. I plant my zinnias along my front sidewalk so the butterflies great all my visitors. They grow quickly and easily and don't really need to deadhead too much either.
Now the roses are kinda tricky for me here in this zone verses the Michigan zone I grew up with. I found two good tricks to share.
#1-Don't plant anything around the base of the rose and keep the leaves trimmed away from the ground or the blackspot will get HORRIBLE!
#2 Throw banana peels at the base of the plant and let it stay there until you can mulch it in and place another. It really works to keep the pests away. I don't know why.
Hope it helps. We'll have to swap sometime!
-Donna
