I will definitely post some updates in time as the garden grows.

There are about 5 big box stores (Home Depots, Lowes) within a 15-20 minute drive of my house. All of them have pretty huge nurseries attached to them. Of course, they all offer the same selection of plants, but it's still a pretty decent selection.

I checked on almost all of them after the hurricane and only the one HD store had 20-30 pallets of plants set aside for trash. Of the plants there, probably half were beyond hope (ie. completely dead). I'm not sure why this store didn't return them (the ones that were still alive anyway) to their supplier(s).

Thanks. The pool was 68dF yesterday morning and warmed to a very brisk 72dF by mid-day. That feels like jumping into a tub of ice when it's almost 80dF outside.

Wow, a lot of work and effort went into creating your tropical look back yard. Reminds me of my younger days in Sarasota, FL. The tropics will always remain special to me.

The local PBS TV station in Austin has taped our yard for presentation in April 09 on a show called Central Texas Gardener. Although I can't go tropical here in central TX, I still have the 'mini-botanical garden' mentality that I had when living in Houston, but with dry climate plants. We have had only 15" of rain in Austin all year - half the normal rainfall - this following the previous year when we exceeded normal rainfall by 50%. Plants grown here have to be very adaptable to change.

I received pictures from a friend who has a tropical jungle type back yard in Clear Lake showing his yard after IKE and it was a real mess. It appears you dodged the bullet in Pearland.

Clear Lake is on the east side of I-45. I'm on the west side of I-45. Ike's eye travelled almost exactly along the freeway. The east side got hammered by the strong side of the hurricane, we got the weak side.

You probably can't tell from the pictures I posted, but there are a couple of sections of the side fence that were blown down and just propped back into place (not fixed properly yet).

We got really lucky. A couple of the palm trees were laying on the ground after Ike passed (and many lost some leaves/fronds), but they had just been planted a week or two before, so there wasn't any damage to the root systems. We just propped them back up and they are all doing well.

Your back yard makes me miss Houston even more. I had two big palms in my back yard there.

The sky is the limit......No reason why you cant try.......Just do one change a year and you will see the results....Its easier than a large thing.

Unless you have the $$$$$$$$$ for a large thingy.

His is awesome.
