What's Growin On - March 2012

I have to admit that this was the easiest Winter I can remember. The unusual warm temperatures certainly played havoc with my perennials in the ground. Here is what the backyard looks like today.

I finished up the bed with the column just yesterday. Shidare Morning Glorys will be going on top of the column - these kinds of morning glorys trail rather than climb and 4 O'Clocks and annuals will be going in the bed. I'm also expecting some seeds from a friend of the new Jams ‘N Jellies Blackberry Vinca! Just released!

Like the Snow Drops, the Chinese Ground Orchids - Bletilla striata are starting to bloom, 8 weeks ahead of schedule!

The Spotted Trillium - Trillium maculatum started coming up about two weeks ago and I just noticed today they are starting to bloom!

The Chinese Lantern Abutilon - Abutilon megapotamicum hasn't stopped blooming. It was the one bright spot in the yard all winter.

The bench in the greenhouse is getting very full!

Come Sunday I will be starting the Morning Glory. Here is the list so far - I'm actually expecting about 10 more from clients in the next few weeks. Here is what I'll be starting on Sunday:

MG - BP-MBR - F4 Cross
MG - Firecracker Vine
MG - Man of the Earth, Big-root Morning Glory
MG - Moonvine - Lavender
MG - Moonvine - White
MG - Plata Ipomoea Caudiciform Morning Glory
MGJ - Beni Chidori - Rare Leaf Dwarf Climber
MGJ - Blue diatube Mutant Leaf
MGJ - Blue Silk - OP
MGJ - Cocoa Chocolate
MGJ - Mixed OP - Fearadyn - F1
MGJ - Platy Blue X Fujishibori - F2
MGJ - Q751 (Tenten)
MGJ - Rose Silk X Fujishibori - F2
MGJ - Shidare - Weeping Morning Glory
MGJ - Shidare - Sunsmile Blue
MGJ - Shidare - Sunsmile Pink
MGJ - Shidare - Sunsmile Purple
MGJ - Shidare - Sunsmile Violet
MGJ - Xiong's Chinese

I'm so delighted that Spring has Sprung!!!!

spring is definitly in the air! There are things sprouting up all over my yard right now from tulips and snowdrops to daylilies, bleeding hearts, and peonies and liatris. I am getting more going inside under grow lights now also and this weekend will put the new cover on the and stick my wintersow jugs in there to give them more warmth.

River, are your in ground perennials coming up early or right on time .. was your winter a normal one or warmer/colder than usual?

I got three and a three quarter inches of rain in 18 hours .. desperately needed rain for sure and it's suppose to rain some more later on this week.

Since all it did was rain yesterday I got all the MG seeds sowed .. they are now on heating mats. I found some 16 cell packs at the Dollar Tree - they are twice as deep and wide as the 12 cell packs which means I can leave seedling in them longer .. Only downside is no cover. I'm definitely going to be buying more of these!

X, it has been a very mild winter here with only 1 really good freeze with lots of ice. We have had temps below freezing at times at night for few days in row but then it gets above again...I have perenials that never went completly dormant and others that are coming up about a month early.

Bummer about the snow! It's windy here today .. in the lower 70's but at least the wind is not as bad as yesterday!

I've been out most of the morning puttering around. Every year I start veggies for a client and got them sowed this morning - 5 of each. This year they picked out three kinds of tomatoes, 2 kinds of cucumbers, 2 kinds of bell peppers, okra, yellow squash and zuccini squash. The dollar tree had these little tubs so I drilled some holes in the bottom for drainage and it's awesome that I can put 12 cups in each tub .. I wired the screen on top of the tubs to keep the squirrels out.

The MG's I started went out to the greenhouse today .. 98% of them sprouted withing 18 hours of planting!

The Plumeria were taken out of the water heater room and are now sitting in tubs of water .. since they were kept dry I'll keep them in the tubs for a few hours to let the soil get really hydrated.

I caught Barney & Feif sitting nicely on the sofa .. not hissing or fighting .. it's actually kind of scary. Barney is on the right. They do look kind of disgusted though.

My white Chinese Ground Orchid is blooming too! - Really want the yellow - hint hint!

And my NOID Azalea is in full bloom .. came with the house.

Beautiful!!

Yep we got the snow and then it got super cold and today it is almost in the seventies, I've got the door open to let the fresh air in. Of course I am out there playing in the dirt. Digging and putting in some new gardens. With this clay and rock soil this is the only time of year I can make any progress with it, right now it is all still nice and wet.

I got my peas planted and will put in my spinich and turnips, also got my fava beans in. I've started a flat of lettuce in the greenhouse. The weather here looks to be above spring temps for this time of year, so I'm just going with it.

Very hard to hold back but I know we will be getting more cold snaps and snow in the next few months. But all my bulbs are coming up nicely and I think I will be getting some blooms in the next few weeks.

Thats a great idea for starting those veggies, I'll have to use it!
