Bumper crop of hardy hibiscus this year

It looks like a bumper crop of hardy hibiscus this year. I counted 74 blooms today and I didn't even try to count the buds. Guess I'll have to get batteries for the camera. I had my first blooms ever on my Lord Baltimore, 12" diameter bright red bloom. I hope to have plenty of seeds to trade this fall.

I am very interested in getting on maybe a list you might make up for a selection of yours hibiscus seed, even if it is only 10 or 12 seeds each!
Please keep me in mind at harvest.

I love the Lord Baltimore .. They are knock your socks off red and big for sure!

If they are all growing close together (open pollination) you might want to hand pollinate some of the flowers yourself and sequester them for a few days by folding up the petals and close them with a twist tie so they can't pick up a neighbors pollen and produce a hybrid. That's about the only way to guarantee getting purebred seeds .. tie some yarn loosely around the stem with the flowers you hand pollinate so when it comes time to harvest you'll know which ones are purebreds.

Thanks great idea. I have the only hibiscus within a mile so any crosses will be between my hibiscus. I'm hopeing to try to make my own hybrids this year. I'm hopeing for a purple stripped one by crossing 'Plum Crazy' with 'Peppermint Schnapps'. I'll keep trying till I come up with something unique.

What a neat idea. At this point I'd just want seeds, no matter if they are purebred or not...
But all flowers drop and no seed capsules. WHY?
How do I hand-pollinate?
Small brush? cottonbud?
HMM...

If you are doing deliberate crosses then you'll want to sequester the flower as well after pollinating. I've discovered that the avery 5167 labels are perfect for labeling crosses and purebreds .. they last the season and the plants don't care. If you don't have a laser printer use a ball point pen - magic markers tend to fade. Or you can just get different colors of yarn/ribbon etc. and assign a color of yarn to each different plant and when you cross then tie the two colors together on the stem with the flower so you know who was crossed with what.

Most important - keep records! If you come up with something amazing you'll be glad you did so you can repeat it!
