wind turbines?

Does anyone here have or have looked into a wind turbine? We are considering putting one up, but are looking for more info and people who own them....see how they like them.

We have been thinking of doing this also. The only thing stopping us is the cost. Those puppies can be expensive!!! But so is our electric bill. I would love to hear from someone also that already has one. I am curious to see how much it actually helps with the electric.

We are considering it. Got a weather monitoring system that tracks just how much wind we get and if it'll be feasible to go to the expense of putting one up. Went to a renewable energy fair in the area and there was some interesting things to check out.

What is the cost on one of those things? And how big are they?

With the price of solar panels coming do, I've been thinking about lining the roof with them. And the cost for such a plan isn't really that bad.

There is huge fluctuation in the cost, but a lot are very affordable, esp if you're just powering a small home. ..and the size, most are not very big, and not very tall, I think he said he could put one up at about 28 feet??? something like that.
DH wants to put up a small turbine with our tax return this year, and then put up solar panels next year so that way we have both going. We get a good amount of wind here, we're surrounded by fields.

DH has looked up a lot of info, and how to do most of the work yourself, he said it doesn't sound too bad, and think of it this way, if you are paying an electric bill month by month, that never stops coming.....in the end, you'll be happy to have something else running for you that you only had to pay for once. That's how we look at it, and why we want one. He just wants to be sure it's not going to be a mistake.

The one we looked at was in the ballpark of $16,000 but I think there might be tax breaks. We are surrounded by farm fields and do get a pretty steady breeze. Hubby works for our electric company and he's concerned because these companies in PA shall be deregulated in a yr. or 2 and then who knows where the prices shall end up.

You don't need to spend that much, we have a big house, and we're looking at one for 5-6,000 for everything. There are some that are waaay high up there, but shop around, you can find some that are much more affordable.

Actually Natalie we have been researching them, we are still in that process. There are different types and we aren't sold on that one yet. Remember, my husband works for the electric company and is not one to blow money for the sake of spending. He knows what we need and that's why before we spend anything we're making sure it's feasible first. We aren't going to get something that isn't absolutely what we need.

I really like the idea of using solar panels. Definitely let us know how that works if you guys end up going that way Natalie. One of the interesting things they had at this expo were solar-powered air conditioning units. Some townships have restrictions about using wind turbines, for example ours have to be so many feet away from our neighbors which won't impact Natalie or our property but might others on here. Interesting stuff nonetheless.

yes it, is interesting.... That is good that your husband works for the power company....that'll probably give you guys a good start!

My husband is the one who knows more about it, I'm mostly waiting for him to make the decision if he wants to do it or not. I'm thinking he will, and we'll have one by this spring. and yes, I 've heard about the restrictions too....definately a lot of stuff to have to know.
I'd really like some solar panels, that was the way I wanted to go, but he seems bent on the wind....oh well....if we end up with a little of both, that would be great.
