They're out in full-force lately....

On my usual late-night walks, I've been running into all kinds of animals lately. Especially SKUNKS!!! OMG omg omg.... They're everywhere. And this one raccoon likes to follow me too, and he likes to try and stop me from walking on "His" sidewalk I guess.... He just stands there, looking like he could possibly beat me up, ha ha! Sometimes I have to walk into the street to get around him. He goes from tree to tree, clinging to it, then stops and slinks his way onto the sidewalk right in front of me. And he is a BIG boy, let me tell you! This raccoon is like the size of a medium-large dog, fed well by everyone's trash I suppose....

Now for the skunks.... I get followed by one of those too, sometimes. As I walk down this one street in particular, I can hear something rattling in every single yard to my right for some time. The first time it happened I was extremely perplexed, like, there's a dog in each of these yards--and it's not barking?? Or, all these people have cats? Wow..... No! Finally I get to a street to cross, and there's this small little skunk, still following me. Would be kinda cute, except when you get sprayed....

Ok, lemme first tell ya that I start breaking a sweat (Usually when no one's around LOL!) and I'm walking pretty fast, out of breath, and well, you know how it is when you're working out--you're in the zone right? Uh huh....
The third time I saw a skunk, it ran right in FRONT of me, then ran across someone's yard, and stopped in front of a low window. Maybe I should mention also that I'd been hearing noises as I was walking this night, too, so it might've been following me as well.

So, I take one step into this lady's garden (oops!) just to get a peek at it.... Mostly because I'm thinking.... awww this skunk thinks that if it can't see me, then I can't see him!!! 'Cause he was turned, not facing me. (DUH!!!!)Then his/her tail goes up. Oh yeah. Right then and there I knew it wasn't that silly fleeting thought! So I started backing away....

Um....too late! Although I was turned around and quite a distance away (I wasn't hit directly) my nose and eyes started TEARING UP like MAD! My eyes were dripping, I was mopping my face into my workout jacket--which stinks a little now too!-- and it was just uncontrolled drooling, tearing, and snibbling from every orifice. OMG! I'm such a dummy!!!!

So I started walking down another street, after that happened. Guess what? Oh yes! Skunks are still following me. I am like skunk bait, I'm telling you.
This time I didn't even see it as I went around a corner. I ran right into it! Then ran like hell. Good workout mmmmhmmm. It sprayed me too, only thank God I was further away than the first time. My eyes and nose were tearing up and snibbling, but it wasn't as bad as the first time.

I'd take that fat raccoon stepping up to me instead any darn day. Or walking slap-dab right into a giant deer. That's another story!

Where's a film crew when you need one! Be careful girl, always keep in mind they could have rabies. Particularly if you see a skunk during the day. How did you end up getting the smell out?

SmileSkunk

Hi,

When I lived in Jersey My collie Bailey had a friend skunk. Everynight when we went for our walk she(Flower)(Well what else would you name a skunk)
Would meet us at the lot by our house walk down the street to the corner where the cat (Rufus) would walk us around the block Then back to Flower and on home. Bailey would go right up to her and was never sprayed or even threntend by her. Unfortunatly she was killer by a car that winter, It was cool to have her as a friend. Sorry about your skunks not being nice.

Shannon

I threw the clothes away LOL!!! And washed and washed. Yeah some of them aren't that bad. I made a mistake thinking it was "hiding" from me, and I ran right into the other one.... more often than not they just follow me and don't spray. This is kinda a big city--probably why they scare easily? LOL!

You can actually make friends with the raccoons. Carry some mini-marshmellows and they will love you! Don't be surprised if it takes a few times with the treats...but they will start waiting for you and your walks.

Be advised! Once you start making friends, you won't be able to stop. And where there is one, there is at least five you can't see.

If your walks are near water, then the chances you are seeing female raccoons are greater...the females stay near water. If no water is present then the raccoons will be mostly males...just the way they work.

As for the skunks....guess you could try feeding them some earthworms and grubs. Not nearly as fun to carry as mini-marshmellows!

If I have to, I might start carrying some grubs with me LOL! For some reason I'm always walking right into wild animals. But I'm no Snow White. hahaha! To name a skunk "Flower" is really cute, BTW.
I walked out of my friend's house in the middle of winter, to get some more books from my car (cramming for school with her that night), and seriously walked RIGHT into a deer. Believe it was female--no antlers? I don't know much about deer. There were three of them, eating my friend's tulips foliage. This deer didn't budge. I was like a fly. I can still smell and taste that deer. I had a migraine from all that studying, took some medicine, so I think that accounted for my walking right into some deer with my mouth open hahaha! I walked right into it's flank, and it was pretty tough fur, not very soft, and smelled and tasted like a dirty cat that's been laying in some hay. Not the worst thing in the world, but I'd prefer a Sonic Cherry Limeaide slushy....
Then I backed up to my car, and watched them. It was really cool. They each lept over my friend's small fence one at a time, and moved on to the neighbor's old tulips. I looked right into one of their eyes... very weird!
There must be a reason why I've always had a strange way of walking into animals. I walked into a goat in Germany. I guess I cut into someone's field. Those thing's eyes are soooo weird! They're like little plus signs. I was young and kept going on and on about how goats must be evil, 'cause those eyes really freaked me out. hahaha! I was like, anything that can eat near anything and has eyes like that must be the work of the devil. Well, I was walking home from a local Octoberfest so you get the drift... !!
