spring fever

New to plantswap. Anyone in the Chicagoland area?

Here the tulips and dafs are starting to peak through the dirt like a bunch of shy school girls. Smart, snow could hit anytime. Maples and cherries are beginning to bud and the irises are breaking ground.

Another winter has ALMOST passed and the fever has stuck. Catalogs are coming by the dozens and the list is getting quite long. Guess more sod will have to go. Countdown to the seasonal opening of my favorite nursery is down to days. Junky you say, couldn't have profiled me better!

"Jane is one of several hybrids developed by the USDA Ag. Rsch Service, all of which have female names. It is a deciduous magnolia similar to Soulangeana, but more compact and shrubby ... Not sure what it's parentage is but anything developed by Ag. Rsch Svs. and tested at the National Arboretum before being released are winners in my book, incl. Miss Jane :-)

Magnolia 'Jane' is another fabulous member of the 'Little Girl series magnolias developed at the U.S. National Arboretum. Jane, is a rounded, shrubby plant producing flowers in late spring that resemble slender tulips. The blooms are reddish-purple outside and white inside. Flowers open just before the leaves appear, making a superb display.

Jane grow as multistemmed large shrubs or small trees bearing slightly leathery leaves that stand up well to summer heat and drought. She has beautifully shaped, extremely fragrant large flowers.

Jane will grow 10-15 feet tall and 10 feet wide at a moderate growth rate. She will do well in full sun, partial sun and shade. Jane prefers well drained moist soil.
