Pray for me now...LOL! Started a new garden project today.

My neighbors won't be too happy with me for a few months, but I started digging up my front yard today!! Hubby said he will buy me a white picket fence next year, and I'm sick of the weed grass that creeps into all my garden beds.

I'm not doing any grass, except for a small section near the driveway (a different kind though!). The rest I'm doing in ground covers and mulch and stuff. I'm going to make a little path all the way around of just ground covers and small plants. BTW I'm doing this with a little Hoe, which has spawned a lot of jokes from my partner. You can probably guess how many jokes one can make with the word "hoe."

This is like a before picture you could say. Only you know I won't be done until spring! Oh man, I left the hose out.

I already started doing this with my backyard:

I will probably just suffer with this grass back here until next summer, because it is a much larger area to re-do. But that's all right. More time to plan something nice! Oops I forgot to put away my shovel. ha ha.

We've been talking about doing this for so long, but I haven't had the guts! I just said the heck with it and started digging today.
I'm going to let the weeds have a chance to germinate once more before winter, then re-hoe them down. And then little by little I'm going to cover the entire area with newspapers and some rocks to hold that down. Then in the spring I will plant some stuff and add mulch to the plants that need it.
I will have to dig up most of my perennials on the side wall of my house, too, and put them in buckets so I can grab and kill every last peice of the grass' runners! I will also have to do the same to my neighbor's side wall, to get the grass that has creeped out of my yard--or else it will be never-ending.

Am I crazy or what? That's why I said Y'all need to pray for me!

If your doing that with a Hoe, you ought to try a pointy shovel.
Get better results.......Or spray the stuff with weed killer.
Or just lay clear plastic on the areas , or cardboard......It kills the stuff to make digging easier..........

I admire your gumption.

Grass has no real purpose anyway so good for you! It'll be an adventure that's for sure. I'm warning you tho, grass has a mind of it's own. Keep us posted.

Hey! That sounds like a GREAT project to me Spring!
And who knows, you just may inspire some of your neighbors to replace their lawns
with more interesting plantings.

Thank you!
And yeah I'm really worried about this rhizome grass! It would creep into my house if it could.

Big job, but you will be so happy when you're done. My friend Sarah has no grass on her front yard and it is gorgeous!

Great way to spend the day!!

Although, I like grass....it gives me somewhere to walk while I'm going from one plant bed to another.

Prayin' for ya', Spring

I have no grass at my first house (now a rental)--front or back. Say "Hello" to weeding! I'm NEVER on top of it and it always looks ratty. Of course, I don't use herbicides for the weeds/grass, so it's hand-weeding all summer long, every day. And I do mean EVERY day.

I'm not trying to discourage you, though. If I could keep up with it, it would be gorgeous. And it is pretty at times (but only the front or only the back; never both looking good at the same time!). And I ALWAYS have plenty of flowers to fill the house with.

I'm wishing you the best. I do think it's do-able. I just can't keep up with that house AND this one. PM me if you need seed to fill in areas. I'd be more than happy to help load you up!
