Here's something you don't see every day...

So I was out watering the garden with my girl this morning and a butterfly lands on the milkweed. So I say, "See the butterfly sweetie?". And she says, "Yes, Mama it has something. Numbers!" Sure enough it had a telephone number on its wing.
I've never seen anything like that before. I called the number but it was just a voicemail box. I tried to do an internet search about telephone numbers on butterfly wings but came up with nothing. Has anyone else seen this? I'm thinking maybe it's to try and track where or how far he goes? Or maybe advertising for those butterfly release things from weddings or events? It was definetly a first for me!

It's a monitoring program

I found out its a program to learn more about them here in southwest Florida. Put together by the master gardener program director at the university of Florida. Pretty cool!

I left a message on the voicemail box I got from the butterfly and a lady called me back and told me all about him. I actually ended up learning some things I did not know about the monarchs in my area. She told me monarchs in southwest Florida do not migrate and only fly a few miles in their lives. My butterfly was only from a couple of miles away. He stayed in the garden for three days. She also told me about the virus that monarchs are getting and that I should cut back my milkweed to the ground in the winter and let it come back instead of just leaving it...I guess the plants left to grow year round are more likely to have the virus and spread it to other butterfly's.
