QuestionPiedmont NC plant swap

I would love to know if there are any plant swaps in the Piedmont or Foothills regions of NC that anyone is aware of. I live in Statesville, NC about 50 miles from Charlotte and 30 miles from Hickory.

Unless another forum participant knows of any established ones, the best thing to do is get one started. It will be a slow process and take time to get active participants but there are many to get the word out. It's a worthy pursuit - lots of fun and making new friends.

Hi, I live in Charlotte, NC and I don't know of any plant swaps around here. I'd come to one if we had one. I've never been to one but that shouldn't stop us from having one! PM me if you want to talk about it.

Hi. I have no plans to have a swap at the moment. I wish I had the time to organize it though. I was wondering if anyone in my area knew of any that were already in the works. Unfortunately it looks like there aren't any. For now plantswap.net is my only trade source other than close friends.

Do you travel to plant swaps often? If there were one within an hour or two I would probably grab a couple friends and go check it out. We haven't had any swaps in that range but I love to go to the Southern Women's Show in Charlotte, NC when I can find the time. I bought the most beautiful cyclamen there over 7 years ago for only $3 and I still have it alive and well today! I was impressed with the variety of plants that were for sale there. It is an annual show that you may like to attend. It usually comes around in Fall but I'm not sure of the exact date. I'm sure you can find it on Google.

Thank you. I would appreciate your support. I would like to attend a few and then try to get some others to join me in planning one eventually. Maybe you could give me some pointers when the time comes.

Hi Anita, I just heard of a plantswap in Raleigh. It's actually a little outside of Raleigh, in Garner, NC.

Here's what I found at gardenweb.com:

Raleigh Fall Swap 2007
Saturday October 6th 2007
2:00pm til 5:00pm
Creech Road Elementary School Park
Garner NC 27529
Raleigh Fall Swap will be held at Creech Road Elementary School Park which is the same spot we held the last Fall Swap. All the shelters at Lake Crabtree were booked until November (Lake Crabtree being where we had the 2007 Spring Swap). The park has a large shelter with bathrooms and running water/electricity. The shelter is a short walk from the parking lot so be prepared to haul your plants to and fro. This town park is a combination Elementary school playground/city park recreation area - so if you can find the school you can find the park. The shelter is at the back of the schools parking lot on your right as you drive in.

I booked the shelter for later in the afternoon to allow those traveling long distances a better chance at participating. Set up begins at 2:00pm (though if you show up early and no one has rented the shelter feel free to stake a claim before the madness begins). General Swap begins around 3:00pm and should end by 3:30pm. At any time special trades can be conducted either at the shelter or in the parking lot. We have the shelter until 5:00pm - but if we still haven’t gotten sick of each other there are picnic tables nearby where we can sit all afternoon long if we want. The parks staff cleans the shelter so we just need to get anything important out of their way. I am asking that anyone lurking about with nothing to do please please please help the swappers move plants from the parking lot to the shelter (and the reverse after the swapping is over).

You can simply plug this data into mapquest (www.mapquest.com):
Creech Road Elementary School
400 Creech Road
Garner NC 27529

Mapquest will also give you detailed instructions on how to get from your house to the park and back home again. For those of you somewhat familiar with the area, here are the basics:
Garner is a suburb of Raleigh. Downtown Garner is 10 minutes from downtown Raleigh and due south of it. The swap location is just past old downtown Garner on the east side of town, north of Hwy 70. Though many of the roads I will mention are highways, in this area they look and feel more like city streets. Get off of Interstate 40 on exit #299 and head south (away from downtown Raleigh). The road you are on is called Person Street or Hammond Road depending on which direction you are going, as it comes into Garner it becomes Timber Drive (there is no "welcome to Garner" sign on this road). Pretty soon you will approach a large intersection of Hwy 70 and Timber Drive. You want to turn left and head east. There are two left turn lanes at this intersection, choose the right lane of these two rather than the far left. You will go through a few traffic lights. The street Vandora Springs will cross overhead. The next street crossing over the highway is Hwy 50, exit on the right onto Hwy 50 and cross over Hwy 70. At the first traffic light turn Right onto Old Garner Road East and head east. At the next traffic light turn Left onto Creech Road. You will see wooded parks and tennis courts and baseball diamonds on your right. The Elementary School is just after all of them, on your right with a large blue sign. There is only one parking lot. The shelter for the swap is at the end of the parking lot on the right hand side.

Let the special trading begin!!!!

Plant Swap

Hi I'm about 12 miles out of Hickory and have contacted my local Cooperative Extension Office about a local plant swap.... He told me they only have one a year an it's only with their Master Gardeners that have taken there course.... Have been talking with other gardening buddies about starting one but discussions are as far as I am right now....

Hey gardegal I'm a little further from Hickory. About 25 miles or so East of there. Statesville, NC. I would love to hear more as you find out what is up there. I wonder why they would make you take a course first. Money??? Welcome to platswap by the way.

Charlotte-area plant swap, September 13

Hi again, I found a friend to help host a plant swap. We're holding it at her house on September 13. It's about 30 minutes from Charlotte, in Clover, SC. I'm starting new post in "everywhere else" so this doesn't get buried. If you're interested, let me know and we'll keep you posted.
