Very nice Sharon!
I'm curious about how you grow your roses in 5 gallon buckets. My mom always tries to leave baby trees and what not in big buckets and planters over winter and they always seem to be dead the following spring. We are in zone 6 and I think they aren't doing well because they freeze and would do better in the ground.
What do you think?

if the buckets she uses doesn't have enough drainage the plant will be killed when the water in the buckets freeze., I'm zone 6b/7a, & I don't water them in the winter. Oh & I allow the leaves to fall around my containers, to mulch them kinda.

back in 2010 I got my first roses Rio Samba & Disneyland- I had ithem n self watering buckets with no drainage holes, each used 2 buckets, Scentimental I found a different design for using only 1 bucket as I didn't have 2, and it had drainage holes, only scentimental survived winter- thus I used that method again, after getting more roses- I'm not allowed to dig in the ground, if I do I can't dig it up & it belongs to my landlord. plus the lawn has moles & voles....

I cut plastic coffee creamers to be shorter, measure on the side of the 5 gallon bucket where they come up to (usually about 1/3 way up).I use a pair of scissors to make drainage holes on the side at that distance going all the way around, usually 5-6 holes, place coffee creamers in the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket, bottoms up to create a resavoir. I mix perlite with potting soil and pack soil between coffee filters-this will wick the water up, the drainage hooles keep the soil from getting too soggy.
