all I know about this plant is called Dianthus spp. I'm sure it has a more general name. the flowers are dark pink/purplish on the outside and light colored in the center. upon searching for more information I did see some similar that also had the light color on the edge.

I can't recall if it's an annual or not. But even if it is it will reseed like mad. It's basically a single layer mini carn. lol Mine bloom like crazy, but the wind will send them all over sometimes. You'll enjoy them.

I've also heard them called "Sweet Williams" as well as "Pinks". Good plant that will return in the South.

if they were planted in a container and left outside making sure to water when needed would it be too late for them to come back next year?

Sky they should do just fine. I planted mine in flower boxes last year around this time and they have come back stronger and fuller.
