Too late to sow, outdoor, from seed?

I was sitting here, preparing some seeds for a trade and I started to wonder. Is it ok/possible to sow seeds dirrectly outside (I'm in Ohio), or are the seed going to be ate, or the temperatur going to be too hot? I was going to try tomatoes and cucumbers, maybe some peppers as well.

I'm not sure about tomato or pepper seeds but the cukes would be fine. In fact later is always good for squashes & cucumbers, helps deter the borers. We're reseeding for spinach now and we're going to plant more beets. Give it a try, that's the fun of gardening!

Too late for tomatoes, cukes are fine. I sowed all my cool weather crops today. 8/12/08 We are in the same zone and usually get our 1st frost around October 10. Look at the days to maturity on the seeds you want to plant and count back from your first frost date.
