not really gardening related ....but harvesting wild mushrooms

getting really excited people.....I've been scouting the woods out here for elm groves....we've only got about 2 weeks left before it's morel mushroom season! And boy do they grow big out here!! I like to take a weekend armed with nothing but a stick, backpack full of snacks and water. and a few large baskets (OH and my camera and field guid just incase.....you never know what you'll see and want a picture of.....and no matter how much you think you know wild mushrooms.....ALWAYS have a guide to properly identify!!)

I usually get a 5-6 lb yeild on a good find! sure beats 8.99 a lb at the grocery store!!

I have childhood memories of going out mushroom hunting with my father (in Iowa). But back then I didn't want anything to do with the mushrooms... it was the closeness with dad, the time out in nature, and the thrill of the hunt!

Make sure you let us know how the hunt goes for you this year, ok?

Not just a Georgia thing, people go Mushroom Hunting Crazy out here in Iowa! Typically then end of April, first part of May for us. (I tend to stay home, I hate ticks, they really freak me out!)

We're good with fried mushrooms here in Texas, also. Set a plate of it down next to a pile of fried okra and you've got a meal.

I don't like mushrooms, although I ate some back in my hippie days, they made colors and sound explode!Once was enough for me. I heard you have to be very careful and know exactly what your picking because some can be lethal if eaten. Good luck on everyones mushroom hunts!!!!!!!
