Hi Beth, the Polgonum multiflorum is a Chinese medical herb. http://www.nutriherb.net/fo-ti.html
We eat the others in Asian dishes. I guess they can be used as medicine to.
Here is the Perilla.

I found it !!!!!

Answer
Hi Ruth,

I grow lemongrass in the ground. I'm in zone 8a. If you are in zone 7 or warmer it would overwinter easily.

In our grocery stores here u can often purchase lemon grass with the root still attached. Now would be a good time to plant directly in the ground. The mature plant will get 3 feet tall and will spread out a little at the base. It's a grass after all but stays in one clump that gets larger over time. To harvest split a bit off the plant or chop the green leaves as needed. It's time now for me to harvest the leaves for our winter tea so thanks for the question. You reminded me to check on it. It does go dormant over the winter but comes back in early spring.

Finally.....deer resistant I haven't a clue. Suggest you plant some in the ground and some in a pot just in case.

I hope I've answered your question
Chris

Hi treehuger, yes, mine freezes to the ground here in zone 8b. I imagine you can grow it in 7. That is as long as you apply mulch. I'll keep some photos coming too.

Dean, Do you grow any magrud or kefir lime. Their leaves are a great thai spice. You do have to protect it. I loose mine through forgetfulness everyonce and awhile. I just saw it down at the natural Gardener. I love it in coconut cream based curry soups and curries. Also, have you eaten at Ma's Thai restaurant off of 290 and westgate. I recommend it HIGHLY!!!!! It is the shocking pink building.
