Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients:
  • 5 or 6 medium sized green tomatoes
(I select tomatoes that appear to be about a day or two from beginning to ripen)
  • salt and pepper
  • cornmeal
  • vegetable oil
  1. Wash and slice the tomatoes, cutting them about ½ inch (or less) thick.
  2. Heat about ¼ inch of vegetable oil in a large frypan.
  3. Salt and pepper the tomato slices to taste.
  4. Dredge the slices in the cornmeal and add them to the pan.
  5. Fry them gently for a few minutes on each side, to a nice golden brown,
just like you would fry a pancake. Serve immediately.

fried mators

I always thought you dipped them in flour? Do you put anything on them as in dip them or eat plain? Are they yummy?

I'm sure that there are other recipes, and that those are delicious too,
but this is just exactly the way that I learned to make them from my MIL in Alabama - using cornmeal rather than flour.

They are super yummy!

Nope, I haven't made fried apples, but I do order them at my favorite restaurant every now and then.

Sometimes, in the winter, I like to make baked apples, with a little butter, cinnamon and brown sugar.

You can make them with flour, just substitute the cornmeal in the recipe with flour. I would imagine it gives it a little different taste. I"m going to have to try the cornmeal though. I have never had them like that before. Thanks for the wonderful idea zuzu!! Sounds yummy.

i use the flour but the cornmeal does sound interesting. I bet it will crisp up a little more. My mom always use red ripe tomatoes and they are delicious also. They just don't hold their shape very well but boy are the good!

They are talking about Ecoli again. I haven't had a chance to find out anymore about it but I doesn't look good. We will have to settle for local grown or out own. And around here that won't be for a while.
