My parents have a mimosa tree and the blooms are beautiful. I was hoping to get one for my yard...but sounds like it's not a good thing to do.

I was just at a good friend's house this morning and realized she has a mimosa in her back yard. I scavanged some seed pods that were on the ground and am thinking about planting one. {Some of the seeds were already sprouting in the pods!}Do you think I am making a big mistake?

I loved mine, and I was lucky that zillions of little 'uns never did pop up around it,
but that is exactly what happens to many folks ... I would advise careful consideration.

Thanks ZuZu...I may just try it. I will probably be lucky to get one to come up, anyhow. I'll cross my fingers!

I, too love Mimosas. I have several on the place. Would love to send you some seed. They are so beautiful, and so carefree. Probably my favorite tree. I so know how you must feel right now.

My grandparents had one in their yard,it was my favorite tree, and climbed it alot too,I have tried to start them too,but a no go.
The smell of the litle pink fluffies were something I won't forget,or the smell of the magnolia tree they had in the front.I was a tree climbing, playing in the dirt kind of kid ,we were poor, but back then it didn't seem so.... we were spoiled with love from them, not things.

Code in my city pretty much stinks. They have the ability to go from the edge(not the centerline) of the street 25'(that's feet) into my yard to accomplish whatever the city feels would be a "Better Situtation for the Citizens in the Community".

They haven't taken any of my plantings or my labor intensive rock lined ditch, but they could without so much as a warning. Living within the city limits often has too many restrains, and if it weren't for the 'deal' we received on this home...we wouldn't be here. We are very 'counrty' in a 'city' world.

Sorry to hear about your tree. It's not something that could just be replaced overnight. But I have a feeling that you will spring back and have something even more glorious in the not to distant future!

Found another "God planted" Mimosa today! I'm gonna take some seed with me when we move. I never thought of growing one from seed but its fairly quick. Can't seem to transplant cause they all die-I've tried so many times. Now I have two in my flower bed. Need to get them up before those long roots go down too far.

Our city can come excavate 25 feet from the road too. They can even dig up my cement pond-its 10 feet from the edge. We can't extend our kitchen like I wanted to do because we could only go 5 feet toward the street. So I have a small kitchen with 8 kids. Didn't plan on that when I bought the house. Hubby is a builder and I thought "No problem-we'll just knock out that wall". Boy was I wrong.

TalkingUPDATE! It Lives!!

Well, those of you who are familiar with Mimosas will probably not be surprised by my news flash
you know that they are survivors, to say the least.

I knew that there was a chance it would try to make a comeback,
but all the same, I was quite pleasantly surprised to see just how strong it's life force is.

The stump has sprouted prodigiously -
(notice the wasteland strip of sand that used to be the front of our lawn )

I can't be sure that any of these shoots will grow strong enough to become a full sized tree,
or how soon that might happen, if it does ... but it may not take too long,
after all, there is still a good sized root system left,
even though all of the excavation surely did a lot of damage.

Many thanks for all the good tree-growin' vibes you guys sent my way!! They're working!!

Wonder if maybe instead of a majestic tree you might end-up with a beautiful mimosa bush!

You're right G'mom,
in the long term, this could turn into a Mimosa with "character".
