Oak tree cuttings

Has any one ever tried to root soft cuttings off an oak tree? I have a small one at the edge of my drive way that is in the way of backing up and it has to come down. There's quite a few new growth limbs forming. I want to try and save some of it, its a red oak. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Indirect Light is a must!

Tess,
My old man plant friend learned how to root bushes and trees and spent 2 hours explaining it to me. It works. Here is a link which is the same as what he taught me:

http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/l...402401274.html

The absolute most important part is the INDIRECT LIGHT; my friend covers a self-watering container with shade cloth to keep the bright light away from the cuttings as they root.

From my own experience, I would try to root about 4 times the amount you want to end up with, as they all will not succeed.

For some reason, he also said to take the cuttings in July. I'm not sure why. Maybe some one else can explain that reasoning.

That's all I know.

Thanks Carmellita, I'll give it a try. I know here's other things that there cuttings won't do any good unless they are taken in July. I figure that the point when everything has leveled out and will stay that way for a little while. Saps not rising, not dropping, hopefully before drought or early fall storms. Thats my best guess anyways.

i'm not sure if this is relevant, but i have learned alot about oaks and saplings whilst rehabilitating mine. oaks are susceptible to Oak Wilt from the months of Feb - June here in Central Texas at least. we are always instructed not to prune or expose the oaks in any way because oak wilt kills trees like crazy.

additionally, i know by July, all my saplings that shoot up from the root system have hardened off a bit, so that could be the reason too.

just a few thoughts from an admitted amatuer!
