QuestionNot Mimosa - but what?

This just showed up in my flower bed and at first I thought it was a mimosa...now after it is blooming, I'm pretty sure it isn't. It has grown like a weed from nothing 3 months ago to about 9' tall with lots of orange flowers. Similar to the peacock tree, there are two petals at one end and a deeper red/orange stamia at the other. This week, I am seeing beans like the mimosa beans on it along with the flowers.

Can anyone help me identify?

I am in the Dallas area and I think I got this accidently in with some of the plants that I put in the garden this year from local nursery. If it's just a weed, I'm impressed!

Any comments would be appreciated.

Alex

WinkRattlebox

I recognize it. It is the Rattlebox - Sesbania punicea.
I have the type with yellow flowers.
DO NOT EAT THE BEANS!!

It is actually considered a weed, but I grow it and use the trunks as tomato stakes for the following year's garden.

Here is a website:

TalkingOh my! Finally! Thanks carmelita33!

Oh you don't know how much I thank you for replying. No one I asked seemed to know so it just kept growing...and growing....

It is really pretty. I have been fascinated at the flowers and the quick spurts of growth you can see daily.

Thank you again for identifying it for me!

Best wishes for your garden!!!

Alex

You are welcome.
When the seeds are ripe inside the pods they make a rattling sound when you brush them with your hand or when the winds blows. It's a pleasant sound.
If you collect all the seed pods and destroy them, it will not become a weedy problem.
Also, I am sure the seeds are poisonous, so watch/warn your children and/or animals.
