Need tree help

I'm a newbie here. My problem is I have a bare back yard. It does have a few bushes and a large round wood flower bed. I need trees for shade but have no idea what would go in a big empty yard. I've been digging up baby trees from friends as I can't really afford to just go 'buy' something. It is a narrow lot with a house on one side and a trailer house on the other side. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've tried finding dwarf trees but no luck here.

Hi femilr, welcome.

Understory trees (trees which are shade tolerant and do not naturally grow very tall) are a very nice addition to any landscape, and of course, what grows well in each part of the country varies - your Agricultural Extension Agency probably could supply a list specifically tailored to your area.
I am in NC, and the understory trees which I have added to my own property include Dogwood, Redbud, Star Magnolia and Japanese Maple, some of those might work in your area, too - and I have seen most of those for sale at some pretty reasonable prices in the nursery centers of "big box" stores.

Good luck in your search.
