Moving a curly willow

Hey folks,

Brand new member here - this is my first post. I live in NC and have plans to move a one year old curly willow. I've read it's better to move plants/trees after the first frost when they've gone dormant - someone tell me if that's wrong. My question is - should I cut the tree back some before I move it? Right now it's about 5 ft. tall.

Thanks!
CoachG

Welcome to PlantSwap! I don't know about the cutting back but it is probably a good idea. I've been reading up on this tree and it is bad for ice damage to the branches. It apparently roots easily in a jar of water indoors in winter.

I've read that they are pretty easy to root. I'll save some for you. Thanks!

Hi CoachG, welcome to the forum.

I've always read that when transplanting, branches should be trimmed proportionally to the damage done to the roots. I'm not an expert in transplanting, but I would think you should trim anything until you actually move it (and can assess how much of the root system was cut).
