QuestionCanary Island Date Palm

I was wondering if it is possible to grow them from the Seeds and how? We are in full fruit production right now, and the fruits are all over the ground and still falling. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Canary Island Date Palms will grow from the fruit, but you will need to remove the outside fruit portion first. Its a fuit with the seed. They are usually a very high germination rat and very fast too!! I dropped in 3000 seds in pots, putting 100 in each gallon pot and so many in each pot germinated that it lifted the soil as a plate in one piece. Each pot split open like jiffy pop popcorn. Hard to do lots of repotting. If you ever want baby palm trees, go around your neighborhood or town and under almost every palm tree is hundreds if not thousands of baby palm trees. They look like a large blade of brass or at least a thick piece. They are usually trampled over or mowed down. I get all sorts of palms that way. At my friends apt complex, they have dozens of mexican fan palms arouns the pools. I noticed there are thousands of babies all around the clusted and mostly undisturbed. Some where as high as 36". I went to the manager and asked if I neatly dug some out, would they mind. They said I would be doing them a favor. I then acheived unlimited supply of mexican fan palms.

Hey guys

Yes, Palm seeds seem to be slow to germinate, but they are pretty much going to germinate, period.

It sounds like you guys are overwhelmed by these guys! Would any of you be interested in a large-scale trade for these? I have plenty to offer. Thanks! (For those who want to know; I enjoy growing plants in bulk, just for fun.)

Mr Green Thumb, I'm giggling at the idea of them lifting the dirt! I would very much like to try to grow a few more! Also do you think a wire/wool scrubby would work to get the fruit off of the seed or something else. We eat these too! Just have too many and they end up under the palm rotting away, god forbid you should step on them! YUCK!

A place that we take the kids fishing has the babies under the large ones. I don't know what kind of palm these are exactly but they are extremely tall! I can definitely get some of those! YAY! How deep would you dig to get them out without ruining the roots? Thanks so much for the info.

Jude, Mr Picky pants! LOL (Sorry I just have to harass you! I'll see what I can get my hands on, Palms are literally everywhere here.

The roots can run deep. But the good thing is that palms are very sturdy. Get what you can. They will most likely survive if general care is given while removing. I use osmocote slow release food. At lowes and home depot. Keep them wet and they will make good friends!!
