What is the name of that big black elephant ear...

Not the ones I've always seen (I think they are clled "black magic") but these have a thick white spine running through the leaves and the leaves are more narrow. Well I found one at the Home Depot when went to buy mulch today but it didn't have a tag with a name. Just wondering what I finally got my hands on. I know I'veseen it in some of your gardens. It is lovely!!!!!

I love that! Is that a houseplant or could it go outside in the ground?

I have to keep it in the house in the winter. Thats an african mask. Of course, zuzu would have to tell you the real name. I wrote on the little tag and stuck it in with the plant and its outside right now. So, I dont have it right here in front of me.

Don't worry, I only go by common names. Wish my brain would store the botanical names like Zuzu can but as they say about teaching old dogs....
I don't do houseplants since I kill them all in no time flat. Wish that would grow outside-oh well.

Yep- that'd be the one!! Got myself two for $7 and had to break apart the root ball but well, well worth the effort. Beautiful plant. Is it a true elephant ear? I hadn't seen one except in your gardens. How long has it been around? Looks like a new hybrid.

I just got this about a month or two ago so I dont really know alot about them. Zuzu will be able to tell you more. I posted a thread asking what it was. Let me look it up and I'll post it on here. I dont think it is an elephant ear though.

Too good! Your foxglove is stunning too! And you beat me on the deal 4 for $8 is sure better than 2 for $7-but mine wasn't clearance. I just had the perfect place for it and was waiting to find it. Hadn't been to the garden shops in a while cause of the hot weather. Everything would die anyway. Actually, I have a confession Deb-I lost the japanese kerria. I am so sorry. I tried and tried but it just petered out right before the heat broke the last time. That's when I just threw in the towel and stopped gardening. I lost my foxglove from another swap too that I babied and babied. Heck, it just lasted too long this year. Very discouraging. So today was the first time I've been back in the stores since, oh probably mid-late July. I missed out on lots of fun but was fighting the heat on the home front until late in August.
Glad to get this good looking plant in my flowerbed today. I'm starting to get the itch for Lowes again! Soon it'll be time to bring the tropicals in the house again. My teenagers are gonna run and hide from me!!!!

Really? You forgive me?

Thanks Deb. But I wouldn't get it to take root before we sell the house in the spring. Maybe if I get a home in Australia in 2010. I know this plant isn't on their invasive list. Thanks for the offer Deb.

African Mask - alocasia xamazonica

yes, it is a type of elephant ear (alocasia)- needs high humidity, no direct sunlight --keep soil moist at all times during the growing season, letting it dry out somewhat in winter.

I worked at 2 of the meijer green houses this summer Beth. They have a pretty good variety there. I bought lots of plants while working there. Sorry to hijack, Donna.
