cardboard palm experiment-join in

Hi all,
Rec'd my cardboard palm (Zamia furfuracea) from gone_tropical the other day and thought I would start an CP experiment on these seeds with others who have also received their cardboard palm seeds from GT.

I soaked my seeds for 24 hours, then removed the red covering, re-soaked for another 24 hours.

I noticed 2 of the 7 seeds floated to top, so they may not be viable.

Today I planted the 7 seeds noting where I planted the 2 that may not be viable.

My seed tray is now on the windowsill waiting for light to grow.

Let's hear from those who rec'd seeds from GT and others who may be growing cardboard palm seeds and compare notes!

Hello

Got some too - gorgeous aren't they?
I notice your seeds aren't visible. How deep are they planted?
Will be planting mine today or tomorrow

Oh goody santoury,
According to a google search, they say to plant the seed flat, covering with an inch of soil. Keep us posted!

Who else is in?

I have some and I planted them after soaking for 2-3 days. I had to work and didn't have time to get sterile mix ( 25 mile drive) . I planted them about a week or so ago. They are in my zone 10 kitchen of the unheated workshop. It probably got about about 39- 41 in there last night. We have short dinners during cold fronts. On really major cold fronts I have been known to cover the plants that are inside. LOL!!!!!!

Oh, this is going to be fun and interesting! Let's record date you plant your seeds, amount of seeds planted, hours of soaking, number of viable seeds, type of soil, and location of tray of planted seeds so we can compare.

Let's see, participating in our experiment are santoury, Diane, marasri, and missg. Are there others? Please join in.

marasri, I think you will be fine with the soil you are using. I'm a little concerned about the soil I used tho. LOL on covering your plants inside. Hey, you are giving me ideas

Let's do this. Each person participating, add your info. below following my post.

flowerdazed info:
Date seeds planted: 1/29/09
Amount of seeds planted: 7
Hours of Soaking: 48
Viable: Possibly 5
Soil: Schultz Potting Soil Plus
Location of seed tray: Inside windowsill facing East

Let's see if we can grow seedlings way before specified time allotment of 4 months! I know my patience will be tested for sure! LOL

oh wow, you all take those seeds very serious! nice
I have more, my other cardboard palm (same kind) is ready to share its seeds. in case anyone wants to join in this experiment

zone 8 and warmer, just toss with potting mix and set the pot/tray in a shaded area where sprinkler gets it. At the nursery we did not even set it in a sprinkler area, just left the pots in our potting area, but then again in FL we do have daily summer rains....
not much fussing needed with those seeds, but Patience is a MUST!

good luck with the seeds

Evelyn
(freezing her behind off in Germany right now)

FB seeds are better than Sabas seed. This could be a comparitive scientific conclussion or a schoolyard chant.

Gone tropical, I would love to have a few seeds, and join in with the experiment. I love to have a challenge with the seeds, and also enjoy sharing "how you make out".

Let me know if we can trade for some when you are done freezing in Germany !
