How to use the PM system

What is the PM system?

PM is shorthand for private message. The forum's PM system allows forum members to communicate with each other privately. It's similar to sending emails, except that the messages are managed through the forum.

Why should we use the PM system?

The benefit of the PM system is that your email account remains private. Forum members will never see your email address (the one you used when you registered your account) when you use the PM system.

You never know who you are dealing with on the internet where anonymity enables fraudsters to easily dupe folks into various schemes and scams (or simply harvest email addresses for mailing lists). It is highly recommended that you refrain from publicizing your email address to individuals who you do not know well.

How do I use the PM system?

You can send a forum member a PM by clicking on their user name and then clicking on the "Send a private message to ..." link from their public profile.

You can read PMs that you receive by clicking on the "Private Messages" link under your username at the top of the page.

What to do about email alerts when I receive a PM?

The forum will send you an email to the address you used when you registered when you receive a PM from another forum member. These alerts are a courtesy to facilitate communication amongst members who may not visit the forums frequently.

The email alerts are sent from the forum. If you reply to the email alert, your reply is sent to me - the forum admin - and not the forum member who sent you the PM originally. PMs should be answered by logging on to the forum and using the PM system.

What happens when the inbox gets full?

There are links at the bottom right hand corner of the private messages page that will let you save all PMs to your local computer in one of several formats. You can save the messages to your computer and then purge them to make room for more.
