Well here is a taste of what we will be doing this winter.
I had never grown petunias in winter before last year~but I was amazed at how easy and hardy they are.
Here is my seed starting setup
They are off and growing
And then they started blooming!!! They grew so fast I even had to cut them back a few times before I planted them outside in spring!
For sure. Once you see how easy they are to grow you will never buy seedlings at the store again!
When we get 10 people or in a few weeks I will post some pictures of the different kinds I can get. Then we can all decide which types we want to try to grow.
Whoot~Huge welcome~~so many of my friends are joining in this year, we are going to have a blast!!
Up to 9~ One more and I will start posting pictures of the types of petunias we can grow. Then you guys can vote and pick what we all want most
Now that we are up to 10 I will get some pictures of the different types of petunias I can get.
I would like to have 4 varieties that we can try out.
We are not going to start the seeds until January. This will give everyone time to get thru the Christmas and New Years rush.
It will also get us thru the darkest longest days of winter.
For now, be thinking of how many growing plants you can handle in your growing spaces.
You don't need heating mats to grow these, just a space with the correct lighting that is a comfortable room temperature for you.
You don't need special pots, just something small to start the seed and larger pots to move them into when they outgrow the small pots. You can be creative and use any container where the excess water will drain from the bottom.
And remember in just a few months time these will be fairly large plants.
But the nice thing about petunias is that you can cut them back when they are getting too large or leggy. It will take a few weeks but they will become bushier and begin blooming again.
You can do this throughout the growing season.
You can also root new plants from the cuttings, or so I read. Right now I have several people who are working on rooting cuttings from the plants I started last year. I will let everyone know how that goes.
Also know that this page is for signups. When we get close to starting our seeds I will create a new page with all your instructions and we all transfer to that one. In this way all the instructions will be the first postings and easy to find for any late joiners.
In the meantime for all the newcomers to this site, there are many great traders here. Feel free to trade, post and get to know each other here.
Now that we are up to 10 we need to vote on the 4 best types of petunias you guys would like to grow out.
I will put up pictures of the types I have found that I really like. I will list them 1-12 in order.
Look at each of them and then post with your vote for each picture as follows. 1-not really 2-ok, and so on up to number 10-really really want.
Really think about the 4 that you want and only put a 10 on those 4.
I will count up the votes for each picture and we will pick the four highest.
