Starting canna seed ?

Anyone have luck with starting cannas by seed? I have soaked them forever, and tried nicking a seed to have them break in half. Any help appreciated.

Some years ago I started some. I nicked the seed using big nail clippers (it was a pain but finally worked), then soaked them overnight and then planted them.

They came up just fine.

Great luck!!

Same Here

That's exactly the way I did mine a couple of years ago. I did put the pot they were planted in out in a full sun place on my patio where I watered them daily not for soil to dry out. I'm in zone 9 & it seemed like they sprouted in 3 weeks in April in 70* + day & night temps. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add that if you're having trouble with the seeds breaking when you try to nick them with clippers, another way that works to scarify seeds is to sand it down a bit in one spot with sandpaper or a file before you soak them. Best of luck...

I also did them from seed by sanding them down with my dremel tool. Soaked them overnight and they came up fine. They bloomed for me the second year but had really strong leaves the first year they came up.
