Slugs.....

Had some in the flower bed this morning, was hoping with all this heat they would be gone. But I am making a beer run. Yup, that's right! I'll be buying one can of beer, first can I've bought in about five years...I don't drink.

This is one of those useful tips that my grandmother(father's side) gave me. Simple really, small saucer/plate, pour some beer in it, let it sit in the flower/vegetable bed overnight, and then clean out the dead slugs in the morning. For whatever reason, slugs are drawn to the smell of the beer, and then it kills them....go figure?

Anyone else have a simple/easy solution for getting rid of those unwanted garden pests? Post them up...I always can use another remedy!

Household ammonia diluted with water (3 parts ammonia/1 part water).

Keep it handy in a spray bottle for the boogers that you see, kills the slugs,
won't hurt the plants.

Ammonia will act as a little bit of fertilizer (nitrogen if I recall correctly) in the soil around the base of plants,
and I don't think that a little mist of over-spray would hurt much,
... but I would not intentionally spray it on directly, so as to saturate the foliage.
If there were a slug on a leaf, I'd knock it to the ground, then spray it,
way healthier for the garden than the old salt treatment.

SDB777,
You can forget the beer run and just go to the grocery store.Just mix one quart of warm water to a packet of dry yeast powder whenever the little buggers appear.Use it the same as the beer. The yeast is what attracts them.I find that the yeast lasts forever in the packets, so they are always on hand.
This is a help for those in dry areas that cannot purchase alcohol.
Happy gardening,
Bill

Hi All, I was having a time will slugs, I still have a problem with them
from time to time. What the beer done kill, I go in the garden at night
with my salt shaker and have a ball. I also use a mixture on my brugs,
that has ammonia, beer and other things. I think that's why the slugs
are not as bad now.
