Great ideas

They give me something to think about. Hopefully I can get them in the ground on Friday...maybe Thursday night but that would be the earliest.

Yep, looks like I've got a new daily weight workout coming up. Those water jugs are heavy.

Rain barrels

Bali I have 2 questions about using the rain barrels which sounds great. First I've heard of collecting the water from the rain gutters but ours goes to the ground. Seems like it would take longer just sitting there waiting for rain to collect in it. Second how do you keep mosquitos out or are they designed especially for that. We have a well so luckily water bills aren't a problem but I would rather use the rain water. Unfortunately the spouting from the gutter comes all the way down. Any suggestions? Thanks

There are attachments to your gutter that you can buy that has a "spout" thatis used to fill the barrel. When it is full you can close the spout and then it operates normally. I have seen them on the internet and they are not that much money. The barrel need to have a lid of some sort so it does not draw bugs or small animals and even children.

Hey Y'all,
Up in the hill country where I come from we put stock tanks at each end of the house to catch the rainwater.Usually 180 gallon size. Installed a faucet in the bottom and covered the top with a frame covered with screen and held down with stretch cords to prevent the wind from blowing it off. We hand dipped with a watering can from the top and drained off the bottom with a garden hose. A slight pitch away from the house kept the water from going back towards the house. Not very expensive, but very handy to have.
Happy gardening,
Bill
