Planting suggestions please!

I am a sucker for container and houseplants. But I looked around my yard this evening and realize I need something that will come back year after year to fluff my yard up. I have a few rose bushes, a little turks cap and mexican petunia. Hopefully my new bulbine starter will spread (looks great so far, thanks, ZuZu!)
Any suggestions for plants to fill up around my fences that will come back year after year and is reasonably easy to care for? I'm not really interested in ground covers, but in taller fuller plants. I am in Zone 7b, I think.

Shellee how about either echinacea otherwise known as cone flowers or gaillardias-blanket flowers. Both are very hardy, carefree, don't need special soil ammendments and can tolerate full sun. The coneflowers get 2-3 ft. tall, the gaillardias vary from 12" to 2 ft. maybe taller I'm not sure. The varieties in both groups are beautiful and both shall bloom for months.
