Deb has some beautiful pictures of her yard-so much space and lush green lawn.
I always have toys in my yard. And I usually still have the remains from my last time of working when I got called away to break up a fight or check homework or something. I'm constantly trying to get a few minutes here or there. That is the only way I can get the big projects done. The kids always want to eat or drink something-and they're real short and run everywhere. If you haven't had any around you lately, you may not understand what I'm saying. I think I'm personally going to blot all the drudgery out of my memory when we finally raise this second family we have (we have four kids ages 3-9 that we are raising and our youngest bio kid is 15.) Its hard to get anything done. Then I'll sit around and brag about how wonderful it was to raise my children-because I'll be oblivious to the memories of daily life! (That's my plan and I'm sticking to it!) I still haven't finished that cedar toy box I tried to start several weeks ago! Maybe then I can get the kids to clean up their toys so I can take a few more pictures. I have a couple in my album that show a bit of the layout of my yard.
I agree it would be nice to see the houses and the whole front lawn to get an idea of the landscapes and how people put their beds together.

I agree with both of you. I would love to see pictures of everyone landscapes, but I am afraid to show you mine. We are in drought right now and I have been fighting to keep my flowers alive little on the grass. And then there is stuff all over my yard. I leave some of my pots laying around after a project. I need to make me a work station really bad. There is Bycicles, Motorcycles, Four wheelers,Lawn mowers, and we don't have a garage. I will start taking some pictures of my yard when it starts looking better. I also have 3 kids one is 7 one 9 and one 14, boy do they know how to make a mess.

yards

My yard is the same. Right now by my pond I have a net laying up there by it. I took a pic anyways. My yard is in no way perfect and never will be. Heck, I dont even have mulch on my beds yet. Theres parts that need mowed and hasnt been. I have kids and grandkids and a job, things to take care of for the semi, things that need fixed, a 13 year old that thinks she needs to run everywhere all the time, and so on so I dont have time to make everything perfect. But still I am proud of what I have accomplished in my yard. Even if parts of it are a mess. LOL And the pics I just posted you can see weeds growing in the beds and I figure that is just the way it is. The one pic of the back yard when it was taken the grass needed mowed but I took the pic anyways. I dont worry about that kind of thing too much. I do the best I can do and that's that. Lifes too busy and too short.

Landscape

Well, I could just send you a picture out of a book BECAUSE that's what I'm dreaming of my yard looking like. I wish I had taken before and after pics - oh wait - I can still do that.

I haven't done much in my yard until last fall. I was a mom (still am) and spent the weekends and evenings with my kids. I did minimal work in the yard. So, how about I put pics of what I have done and what I have going and you all can fill in with your own dreams?

Sounds like everyone's yard is in the same kind of condition...a work in progress.

Snowmm- you're so funny-thanks for the morning laugh!
Deb-you're too modest. I didn't see anything that you mentioned-all I saw was beautiful grass and multi-colored rocks and different flowers and beds, and like Snowmm said-I can envision the dream. I looked at your iris and saw massive clumps of beautifully blooming irises-its gonna look stunning. And that pond is really a lovely site. ( I also enjoyed the picture of the kerria-hope mine looks that pretty!)
Maybe I'm being too self conscious. I'll have to try to get a few broader shots this weekend. Maybe I can just toss all the bikes and toys in one area to minimize the effect!
Then if I can just pick up after myself I'll be in business-at least for a few minutes!

I don't think yards need to look perfect! I was just curious about how you all interpret things. It's similar to reading those gardening books and magazines you get inspiration from. We all have works in progress - if we didn't we wouldn't need to trade for new things.

I like to see how others have made their gardens too. I like to see what they used for borders, how they made their beds, etc. I love to go to other peoples gardens around here and look around. I have used some pretty odd things in my garden. I have 2 window screens out there are that are a trellis for my morning glory and moon flower seeds. I used fence posts split in half to border some of my garden around the house. The front of the house the border is pieces of trees that had fallen on our property and had been cut into pieces around 18 inches long, then last summer my son split those in half for me. I laid the smooth side down and left the bark and outer parts of the trees sticking up. But it was free and you cant beat free. LOL Especially since I had spent so much on plants last summer. I have benches that I made out of bunk beds. Chairs that I painted that need a hole cut in the seat for a pot to go into. I have a bench in front of the house that was made from an old pole and a thick slab of wood. I use anything I can get my hands on. LOL And now my husband has a welder and he says hes going to make a trellis for my trumpet vine for me. I think learning to weld will be my next project. LOL

Around my place, it's sort of tough to get those nice, sweeping panoramic photos,
it's kinda jungle-y, and I don't guess most folks would really call it a "landscape".

I have a slideshow if you want to watch it: Here
The pix were taken in various seasons.

*Warning - it's about 3 minutes long.

Your pictures are great! That's what I was looking for - just to see what everyone does. We all have different ideas, different styles, etc. You have some great accessory ideas. What are those tall glass items?

Aww, Thanks to both of you for your kind words, it's kind of a wacky garden, huh?
I usually explain that I am not a landscaper,
I am a plant collector.

Hubby and I have been here for 22 years.
For the first 8 or 10 years, I did my best to stick to a more traditional gardening style.
I was really trying for a cottage-y look ...
... but I guess the Florida blood running through my veins finally won out,
and bit by bit the "jungle" is crowding out what remains of my cottage garden plants.

I usually do lose a few clay pots every year, especially if I get lazy with my autumn chores.
I try to plant mainly annuals in my terracotta pots, and when they die back
(if I'm a good girl), I empty the pots and use the old potting medium to top-dress my garden beds,
then I clean the pots out, and store them upside down under a tarp, so that they stay totally dry.
In my climate, they will only crack or flake if the moisture in them freezes ... so DRY is critical.
I was NOT a good girl last fall, and sure enough, I'm finding the damage this spring.

Well, as I said, I am a plant collector, but I am also a junk collector ... ... with a glass fetish.
The "tall glass items" are something I call "electrified glass totems".
I made them by stacking the glass globes that I salvaged from old lighting fixtures
which I picked up at yard sales and thrift stores.
My talented hubby added the artsy copperwork that beautifies and helps to stabilize them.
There is a length of cable lights inside each one
(kinda hard to tell from a daylight pic).
They serve as an even more "interesting" nighttime feature in the courtyard.
