The merits of pinching

Jake, I wanted you to see a lone petunia that has come up from 2 years ago. It was, like most seedlings, a single stalk and was on its way to be leggy and ugly. 2 days ago I pinched the terminal leaf bud out of it, and now 2 days later it has 3-4 new side shoots of growth noticable.

I will pinch each of the side shoots when they get 2 set of leaves on them.

Wow! Thanks for the info, and the photo. I can't wait to start seeds next year. Or is it too late to do some this year? I tried a lot of direct sowing this year, and most of them didn't work. I have some successful cosmos, pumpkin on a stick, and one plant that the label washed off of... so it's unknown for now! Will be a surprise.

This year I plan on trying winter sowing! Excited!
