Living StonesIs anyone familiar with these? I visited Arizona over the summer and brought some back with me. The pamphlet I received with them indicated that they shrivel up during the winter months to absorb the old leaves and then the new ones will develop. Well, mine were doing very well and then started to shrivel back in Nov. However, there is no absorbing going on and I would have thought it would have happened by now. If anyone has any tips, I'd greatly appreciate it. I know living stones are not native to my area (Philly) however, I have them in a bright bow window and all summer, were doing great. Just curious about the winter phase they are supposed to go through. Thanx! |

lithops is very interesting - and they've got some of the most beautiful flowers around. i got some in early fall as well...at the time, there were 3 sets in the pot - all had new 'leaves' growing up & out of the first pair. one of the sets quickly died off - the other two held on for quite a while and then another one bit it. i've one left with only the newer pair of leaves still on it. i haven't watered them since i've had them as they're supposed to get very, very, very, very little water - especially in the winter time. it's probably almost time to give them a little spritz. do you have them in a warm enough spot? they also don't like too much sun - at least the variety i have doesn't like it.

from what i understood about them, they need very, very little water and basically none during the winter months. as for temps, i'm not sure. maybe it's just the particular one i have or maybe i've got the info wrong! i did have mine by the window (east facing) and it was looking not so good, so i put it over on the plantstand (not near a window) and it seems to look a bit better now. the previous owners didn't spend a lot on the replacement windows - so there's not much insulation from the cold. i've had to move quite a few plants away - even those that need the sunlight as it's just too chilly for them.

I bought so many different ones a few months ago and now Im down to 4. It makes me mad that mine have not done well at all. Mine got real mushey and then died.I won't be buying any more that is for sure. All the other succulents I bought from the same place are doing good.

well, I e-mailed a lithops person from a website I found and they responded promptly and said the new leaves shouldnt emerge until later spring so I will keep my fingers crossed that I am not slowly killing mine!
