Join me for a backyard picnic... I took some pictures this morning of the back yard. I (and my family) spent quite a bit of time this summer doing our own landscaping work for our new pool. Probably 15-20% of the plants in that panoramic were salvaged from the trash of a local Home Depot after Hurricane Ike. Some of the pics in my backyard album got a bit whitwashed in the strong sun, but I tried to tone that down with some image wizardry. Here's a few of my favorites:  There are about 5 hanging baskets in the Live Oak tree. There might be 50 different plants in that frame (some are hard to see/make out in the back).   We got the Triangle palm for a song.  If you look real hard, you can see the 3 baby Queen palms that I received in a trade with Santoury in front of the Cannas. There are some Amaryllis plants too close to the Cannas which I need to dig up and move. The Alexander Palm in this frame had some moldy gunk at the top center of the largest trunk and we got a deep discount for it when we bought it because of that. The folks at the Palm nursery said that it (the tallest/main trunk) would not grow any more. We cleaned the gunk out after planting it and guess what? Looks like 3 leaves are sprouting out now!  Lot's of various palms and philodendrons  The Travellers Palm front and center was one of two rescued from the HD trash pile. Both of them have new leaves sprouting at the moment.  All of the plants in the foreground were rescued from the HD trash - Majesty palm, Areca palm, Cavendish dwarf bananas, silver sage and a bouganvilla in the pot.

| Thanks for all the compliments. It is going to look really awesome in a couple of years when the plants fill out a little more. As far as how it was done... The work crews that dug for the pool (and piping) pretty much removed all the grass in the yard. We installed a french drain around the back side of the pool decking (underneath the bull/river rocks) because the yard was ~1-2 inches higher than the deck. Between digging holes for all those plants and shoveling the rocks/mulch, it took many weekends of back breaking effort to put that together. And that's after the weekends we spent removing the 6 trees we had on the property before the pool crews would dig. We didn't have any well thought out plan for the arrangement of the plants. I like the jungle look, so it's a bit helter skelter (while still maintaining some spacing/form).

Hey I'm loving this look - and you're absolutely right about the jungle look. There's simply no other way, is there? I'm happy to see the little Queen Palms in there. Can't wait to see them when they're larger! I cannot believe the selection at YOUR Home Depot! I'm so jealous! |

| Beautiful! even with the plants being young it already looks so tropical, just wait, in a few years this will be an awesome jungle. I love your selection of palms! And you are lucky, boxstores where i live do not throw out plants, they give them back to the vendors, so no chance to get cheap/free plants |
