any hope?

I made the mistake of overcrowding my Cannas. When I dug them up, they were all a huge mass of roots. How can I safely separate them? I am afraid I will damage the rhizomes and they will not come back next year. They are stuck together like a huge ball of tightly knit yarn

Hopefully they are okay.. I planted mines a foot apart in a giant pot and noticed that they all grew toward each other.. I didn't dig them up but moved the entire thing into the garage.. Now you got me thinking too.. Hopefully both of our cannas are okay..

Cannas are very tough plants. You can break the rhizomes apart without worry. They need to be divided when they get crowded like that or they won't bloom.
