AngrySnails! On my ORCHIDS!

These wretched snails are totally offing my orchids! I have been gathering orchids for my orchid garden for years and have gotten them to bloom and grow, and then all of a sudden these little bastards are eating them and killing them off! How do I get rid of them?

Beer traps and physical removal work for me. Sink a bowl of beer in the ground, they are attracted to it and fall in. Just be sure to empty it after.

Diatomaceous earth

This stuff will tear up snails, slugs and other soft-bodied pests - LINKY
and, it's environmentally friendly & non-toxic - just be careful not to inhale it or get it in your eyes when applying.

Just make sure not to use Pabst. You might get a hipster invasion... not so dangerous to the orchids, but will wreak havok on your wifi.

Crushed eggshells also work.

I use both the diatomaceous earth and crushed eggs shells for snails in the garden and it has worked for me. When I tried the beer thing it did not do so well. But, then I was told that I was using the wrong kind of beer. Like what do I know about beer? Anyway, I was told that they prefer dark beers. I used a pie pan with beer in it and it did attract some of the snails. But, I think the diatomaceous earth and eggs shells work better for my snails. Just make sure you use food grade diatomaceous earth and not the stuff you use for pool filters.

Diatomaceous earth? Where do I get that? Will it harm my babies? I love my orchids. I'm a fifteen year old girl. I like orchids. I like all things cute and pretty. It's extremely annoying. Anyway, the stuff won't harm my orchids? How do I use it?

EBay has it too. It's simply very finely ground up silica, but under a microscope you can see that it looks like tiny shards of glass. To you, it will feel like powder, but to those bugs, it cuts up their undersides and kills them off. It's totally natural and organic. It can even be eaten and if often fed to farm animals to prevent worms etc. Some people even ingest it themselves as a health food.

I think people ingest it as a de-wormer and anti-parasitic. Just be sure to not get pool grade for such things. and yeah, the stuff powders up in puffs, don't breathe it, as those same sharp edges are hard on lungs and breathing passages.
I am having issues with slugs, too. They are on my inside plants, probably hitched in on the plants that were outside in pots over summer. the warm spells between the severe cold has them reproducing like mad.
some people use copper wiring or even pre-1983 or w/e pennies, some people use coffee or other things with caffeine ( I had no luck here, and too many coffee grounds on surface makes it ware repellent). some people buy fancy electric traps, too.

Take aluminum wrap and crinkle it up and put it all the way around your plants. If they are in pots, then wrap it around the pots. It worked for me for some other plants that I had in pots on my front porch. I forget why it works, but trust me it sure does the trick!!!

I have the same problem with snails eating my hostas...

I use soda bottles and put either beer or slug bait in them, and place them under the plants. I gather them every morning, screw the caps back on (if they are full of slugs) and throw them away...

no, I don't drink the soda, but I have a lot of co-works that do and they gladly save them for me
