I haven't been able to find the diatomaceous earth. Haven't made it to any of the smaller specialty garden centers, but Home Depot and Lowe's don't carry it.

Wal-Mart does; it's in with the Ant Control stuff. In biggish white bottles with red caps.

Thanks, Lorax. I'll check there. Maybe Home Depot and Lowe's also carry it and I've just been looking in the wrong area of the store.

Got any feed stores near you? That is where I've found it. I've actually used it in small amounts on my cat's fur when they had fleas. But have not used it for slugs before........gona' give it a try though. Do I need to reapply every time I water?

Thanks! I'll get out the shaker & put it out.......everyday, but if it will get rid of them it will be worth putting it out everyday. They have really done a number on my hostas.

Grumpy, a thought just hit me. In many parts of the US, DE is marketed as "Moler" or "PermaGuard." So you may have been looking right at it and not seen it.

This was pretty good info. I'm going to try the iron nitrate pellets, like Sluggo or Es-car-go...it says it's pet safe, kills within 3-6 days, good for the plants, and stays undissolved for up to 2 weeks, and easy to apply...so we'll see how it does.

I'll run out tomorrow and get some diatomaceus earth.

Here's a site with a lot of deterents/traps:

SLugs and snails are the pests that seem to be universal.
Every year I put out several dishes filled with beer and in the early mornings I have to collect all the buggers.
Only in extreme cases will I resort to chemicals such as snailban or Sluggem which are both commercially availalbe here. Extreme cases only - I have a doggie that thinks the stuff looks like candy.
