Was at the Home depot today. And 3 ft tall plants were on sale $9.98 or something like that.. Had a philodendrem there not the heart shape leaves, but they were scalloped leaves an pretty.. i went round an round trying to convince me to get one.
Then I looked at the leave of them.. Low an behold on top was the white cotton like bug stuff ..(Is that Mites) Then I knew why the one leaf was already dead.
An on sale.

I didnt buy it . wow glad I looked .

I think what you saw was evidence of mealybugs. They are terribly annoying to get rid of and some have told me "nearly impossible."

So glad that you looked closer at the tree before you purchased. One thing a gardener doesn't need is an infestation of bad bugs. Good eye.

Question

Thanks both of you ..

Strange they always blame us for those. I told the guy standing by theres something killing the plants .. More than one was brown already.. He came over an looked at it an said . We dont take care of the plants here, some one comes in once a week an does it......I showed him it..

Look out folks the stores may not be healthy either ..

Thanks for the info Bali – I know that our Home Depot and Lowe’s has outside plant people that sell in their stores. Sometimes you see really nice, full, healthy plants, and other times not. The stores themselves don’t seem to care much one way or the other.

Right the stores get paid for the losses.. I was told.

All the former green houses in our area have called it quits.. Cheaper to bring it in , than raise here with the heating costs....And wages.

I agree

Not only do they get paid for their losses – they throw still alive plants away in the trash and won’t let me take them out. Very sad to see plants that only need a good home and some TLC sitting in the dumpster.

I did not know they got paid for their losses. Well, that explains a lot! No wonder some of these stores like our Walmart & some of the Home Depots I've been in have such cruddy plants. I guess it varies from store to store. I've found one Lowes in Weatherford TX that for the most part seems to take care of their plants & most of the time has good prices. Another Lowes about 20 miles east of there has so so plants & higher prices.

Talking

This sure don't sound like my local Lowe's
Maybe it is under the UNION control. up North. The ladies and guys who are at my local Lowe's are always taking care of the plants. and when plants are in too long they do closeout prices and always have a couple close-out shelf's. and end of season they really cut prices to get rid of all the outdoor plants. And all i have to do to get their used trays and pots is ask!!I got some nice pots last year. including hanging baskets and specialty pots.ALL for FREE There are 4 just like that within a 20 mile radius of me.

Our Lowe's is pretty good about bugs but a lot of the stuff I buy from there ends up dying. I always look at what zone stuff grows in but I think they slip some in on me.

bali, you did the right thing. those little white things were probably mealy bugs. they look like little patches of fuzzy stuff and spread fast. if you ever see them on any of your plants except fuzzy leaved plants, go to the store and get some regular listerine mouth wash and spray on top and on underside of leaves and stems. listerine works as well for any kind of pests that you can find on your indoor plants. on fuzzy plants like african violets get a systemic poison and treat as directed and separate that plant from the others for at least 2 weeks til you make sure all pests are gone.
