Valerie this is what I found.
Chemical
Sugar-based baits containing 1 percent or less boric acid or baits containing 1 percent or less sulfluramid are often well accepted by this ant. Baits with a higher concentration of active ingredient are usually refused. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SPRAY THESE ANTS. Sudden disruption of the nest due to spraying or other factors can cause nests to split and worsen the infestation. Perimeter sprays with repellant insecticides like pyrethroids are also inadvisable since ant colonies nesting under a structure and foraging outside may become trapped and forced to move their foraging activities into the building.
I try not to use chemicals. I put grits or baby cereal down across their paths. I'm not sure how it works but they carry the grits to the nest and before we know it they are gone. If they aren't I mix a little Boraxo (Boric Acid) in with the grits and that seems to work. Unless they eat a lot of it Boric Acid isn't harmful to pet or humans. Like this article says if you put to much Boraxo they will avoid it. Good luck.

Valerie I found this:

Here are a few of Jerry's tonics for critter control.
ANT CONTROL TONIC #1
4 to 5 tbsp. cornmeal
3 tbsp. bacon grease
3 tbsp. baking powder
3 packages of yeast (I would opt for the rapid rise)
Mix cornmeal & bacon grease into a paste, then add baking powder &
yeast. Dab the gooey mix on the insides of jar lids, and
set them near the ant hills.
When ants eat this mixture, they swell up and go to the big ant hill in
the sky...

Actually haven't tried it, but it could work.....

Are you talking about fire ants? We gave up that battle a long time aGO. I live with them mostly. SO many. There is a new parasitic fly that they are experimenting with some success here in Austin and the flies are spreading. They are thinking of bringing in mor varieties of these flies to counter balance the fire ants. There is a new ant now in areas of Houston that I have heard about. They are real neurotic and run everywhere in crazy circles. It has people worried down there.

we get them awful every year and fight to keep them out of the house and our pantry. the only thing I have yet to try is burning the entire property to the ground......and yes, I have entertained the thought. I hate those little buggers!!!

Burning does work.... not well but it does makes me feel better. I do actually use a propane torch to kill the ants near the edge of my ponds, it gets rid of them w/out poison.
We have the same ants here and they've been a problem ever since I can remember. My wife swears our house is built on a huge ant hill. I really don't mind them outside, just don't come in. But they do. After a week or so of wet weather my daughter found them moving their nest into one of her drawers.
When they move their nest inside is when they get to be a real pain, hidden in the walls , instant ant trails as soon as any crumb hits the floor.
I used a poisoned bait type pesticide, kills them all off, eventually. I even added a little bit of whatever they were going after in the house to the bait. The first time I did it , I put a few drops of sugary water right on the bait. they found it right away and fed and fed. Seemed to work very well.

Have you ever used Boric acid? it is a powder and you mix 1 cup of syrup to 1 oz of boric acid. mix really well. Then place this in a flat pie pan like container it you have no pets leave it in the ants travel path. If you have birds and pets put in a covered container like a milk jug or something and leave the lid area opened for them to crawl inside ,now it will take a while for them to take it back to the nest but I know this works as we had carpenter ants inside our house in February one year while snow was on the ground. So I did what I told you to do and it took about 2 to 3 weeks to kill them off. Change your mixture when the ants start piling up or it gets crusty on top....good luck.
