'A Whiter Shade of Pale'

How on earth can a song correlate with a flower? 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' came to mind when I noticed my 'Bella Red' Abutilon today as the bright red blooms of March of 2009 and again shown in March 2010 turned to pink.

'Bella Red' Abutilon - picture taken in March 2009, soon after I purchased it.
Here is a picture taken in March of 2010, still red as you will see.

Today, I noticed this.

I couldn't believe it, looks like she turned to 'Bella Pink'. Although I do like her new color, I have to see I prefer the bright red she once was.
Any thoughts on what happened here? As I said earlier, I've been growing this plant for some two years and it's the first I'm seeing of the pink color rather than bright red.

Are you 100% sure it's the same plant? OR maybe somebody did a switcheroo on you ?

Maybe it just ate up all the nutrients that it needs to stay red. Perhaps a soil additive would help bring back its color. Donít know Ė just guessing.

Are you having nutrient issues? That can affect the colour of both Hibiscus and Abutilon - have you repotted in your 2 years?

tss, absolutely same plant and nope, no switchoroo here.

swamplady and lorax - maybe that is it. What soil additive would you recommend? Last year I transplanted 'Bella Red' to a larger pot that included a mix of other plants. Although a pretty sight, I think I prefer Bella Red in her own pot again and is what I will do!

I'm in love! As I understand it, the color of flowers is determined by enzymes and how they metabolize. The ambient temperature as well as soil temperature can actually alter the color of flowers .. On the other hand, it could just be a sport. Is the color change on one stem?

I've had brugmansia, no matter what the cultivar is go totally white in the Fall when the temperature drops 20 degrees one night.

We are definitely going to be trading abutilons & other plants Flowerdazed.

Have you got the Souvenir de Bonn with the variegated foliage?

Oh I so can relate Xeo. as abutilons are my latest craze. I will be able to know more re 'Bella Red' as there are buds on another branch so we'll see what that brings. And speaking of color change, I had that happen with my 'Marilyn's Choice' abutilon just recently.

'Marilyn's Choice' Abutilon, picture taken in October of 2010
In January of this year, she turned a different hue.

That would be great Xeo for upcoming abutilon trades as well as other plants.

I do not have 'Souvenir de Bonn' but I now want it to add to my collection for sure! VERY PRETTY

I do have I think it is called Variegated 'Thompsonii' and correct me if I am wrong please as I spent many hours sometime back researching names and not 100% on their names. Sort of yellow/gold in color.

Picture taken January of 2011

A closer view.
I have been growing Variegated ' Thompsonii' for some four years.

I also have the Abutilon striatum in my collection. I lost one in 2008/2009 and replaced her October of 2010. Please correct me if the name is incorrect.

Oh my .. now I have severe abutilon envy .. you have a much larger and prettier collection than I do .. I started getting into them about 2 years ago and have the plain thompsonii, souvenir de bonn which I think is a pictum and megapotamicum. I also have a rose colored hybridum. I traded last year for some new abutilon seeds, Huella, Rosalie, and Victor Reiter. I've got all three started but they haven't come up yet.

I discovered the megpotamicum is uber hardy as I left one out the whole winter in a container and it didn't even blink .. stayed green and everything! Since it's a trailing, it's great for hanging baskets.

Thanks Xeo! That is great your megpotamicum made it thru winter. Mine are all grown in one particular area. I had them covered thru most of winter with frost cloths and they seem to be fine, thank goodness. I transplanted 'Bella Red' today so she is now in her own pot. I also bumped up 'Marilyn's Choice' today to a larger pot as well. Good luck with your nice variety of abutilon seed. Let us know how you make out and yes, let's do a trade on your Souvenir de Bonn in the near future.

marytaylor and michele, thanks yall. michele, yep these beauties are contagious so watch out. I'm hoping to enlarge my abutilon collection come April as our N. O. Botanical Gardens Spring show is then. 'Marilyn's Choice' came from NOBG last fall.

bali, I'm not sure on the color thing but from what Xeo explained, it does make sense.

Any abutilon growers/collectors out there?

Thanks Diane!

Okay yall, one of the buds opened on 'Bella Red' today. Started out like this.

And I'm thinkin' yeah looking good for red. Today she opened.

As you can see, not quite the red and not really the pink either. But a nice cross between the two. I still prefer the red. There more buds on this plant so we will see what they bring.

In the meantime, 'Marilyn's Choice' is dancing she is so happy.

When her buds open, we will see what color she will bring.
