A little experiment

For those following
4th showing - epiphyllum strictum
I have to tell you I just looked outside and the epi is still in bloom at 8:30 p.m. It opened last night, continued thru the day and is still open. I decided to cut it and vase it to enjoy inside, as well as to see just how long it will stay open.

After I cut it, I found this.

Just too cool for words. I had no idea I would find this.

I want to see just how long she will stay in bloom in water inside. It is rather cool outside so I suppose that is why she lasted so long so far. Has anyone cut the stems and vased? She is soooo pretty! I'm thankful

Thanks Barbaralee. It will be interesting to see just how long she will stay open inside as Night Blooming Cereus generally only open for one night, then wither on their stem.

maybe it being cool is why it stayed open.

Barbaralee, I sure can relate.

Thanks mcole. Yep, that's is what I think too, skay, as to why she has stayed so pretty.

Last night at 12:30 p.m.

This morning around 10:00 a.m.

She's on her decent and was so glad she decided to stay an extra day and night. Interesting, due to cool weather.

Hi Diane, glad you enjoyed! Cool weather definitely played a part in a much slower blooming process, from length of time til bud opening to closing during the latter month of November.

Very cool!

But... what is the white thing sticking out of the stem? Some kind of core portion, or a wormy thing?? :O

Hi Nightshade,
I'm glad you asked. When I cut the stem from the epi leaf, I was truly in awe as I hadn't seen anything like it. I just thought, 'how cool'. I'm hoping I have not compromised the epi leaf I cut it from. Maybe someone else may know more about the 'white tube' thing. Not sure if anyone has cut the flower off since it generally blooms for one night. Others?

Thanks Penny, willow, and GOE! LOL GOE. Well, we are having mild weather this way, for now anyway. It's been feeling like spring and some of my plants are in bloom. That will soon change tho.
