Thought of you this am while watching the news - they said your area was under a frost warning. Hope we don't get any this soon, but it's been getting close at night! I say YUK, I hate winter.....I'm already whining...

Frost here in Pa!!!!!!!!!!

We had frost here in my neighborhood already..... I live near Quakertown..... Especially on the car windshield in the mornings......... I just start the car and let the defroster do the work. I gave up on scraping windshield a while ago.

Last weekend we started getting ready for next year(Spring) We pulled all the plants from the seed swapping garden... had a second huge compost pile..... then on Thursday we decided to buy a chipper at Lowe's and this weekend we spent the time chipping all the matter in the #2 compost pile. # 1 compost pile is going the natural way..... compost makes great soil for gardening.
I have collected lots of seeds to swap as soon as I can get them dried and packaged..... We have really had a beautiful Fall so far.

Frost here in Pa!!!!!!!!!!

Hubby and I pulled all of the cannas out and put them in the basement for the Winter..... Any indoor plants we had outside for the warm weather are now in my kitchen or n the basement for the Winter. I have a Monkey Pod (Samanea Samen) from Hawaii and that's now in my kitchen. I'm waiting for it to go through Fall.... falling leaves in my kitchen. If you have the time and weather, you're better to bring them in a little early rather than risk losing them to frost and cold. The plants will go through a transition period and lose leaves, but this should be temporary.... and they should stabilize within a month or two. I also have a 5' plumeria plant that I started from a store bought shoot that I also bring in the basement. Our house gets a little crowded in the Fall...... then it empties out a bit in the Spring.

How many plants do you all need to bring in?

Hi Kratz7, I am in Ala. so I get to leave my canna's in the ground, or I have for many years...I have about 8 Hibiscus Plants that we are probably going to bring in, this is my first year with Hibiscus and they maybe ok, but I hate to take that chance....They are about 5-6 ft tall...sure would hate to lose them..You know? I have some jasmine and mandivilla in pots that I'll bring in this year, because we didn't get them in the ground this year for we was redoing our swimming pool and I wanted them planted around it, so now I'm thinking I'll wait until next year. Other than that I think we'll leave everything else out...The weather here is still pretty warm....I'm not looking forward to WINTER...yuk...LOL but I know we need the winter months like we need the summer..! You have a blessed day...Good talking with you!

Frost here in Pa!!!!!!!!!!

lol, I'm so jealous Diane,

I wish I could leave all of my Summertime plants out for the Winter, but they would all surely die after the first heavy frost. What color plumerias do you have? I have one pink and one yellow. The pink one is still young and rather small. The yellow on is about 5' tall and is shaped like a Y. I would like to cut a few pieces off of it, but I'm not sure if I could without killing it. Did you ever try doing that. And do you get alot of blooms on yours? I did get a few blooms last year, but none this year. It was nice green and healthy but no blooms.

Kratz7

How are the leaves looking lately? Ours are startinng to change color, they are looking like Fall.

No frost yet just a few miles NE of Philly

Hello all!

I grow mainly tropical plants outdoors in the warmer months and quite a few can't make it more than a day or two when it gets cold and wet. I lost a few last year when the night temps turned to around 54 degrees and it began to rain a little. I brought almost all inside in the first week of September because I didn't want to take a chance again. That was very depressing.

I still haven't dug my Canna's yet and still have a few of the tropicals that I grew in modified garden soil that are showing signs of dormancy about now. I will have to dig those within a week or two. I grow a large variety of Tuberous aroids and related non-tuberous Species. Mainly some of the rarer Philodendrons.

My basement is bursting at the seams with plants right now.
