| The first of the summer started out HOT HOT HOT here in West Tx. But now it is very nice. Usually by this time I can't stand to even walk outside, much less work for any amount of time in the yard. I am really enjoying this! (Knock on wood...hehe...don't want to jinx myself!)

| Shellee what's a typical summer temp for you guys? And do you get the humidity like we've been getting lately? It's been 6 days of dangerous heat & humidity (quoting 6 ABC news) and no relief in sight. I agree Angie, thank goodness for ac! Any outside work has to be done in early morning. |

| The first thing ,before work, and late ,before sundown. That's the times I get out,the heat makes me sick, had a heatstroke a couple of years ago,now I can't take it much at all. If you get to feeling bad from being hot from outside, get some pedialyte,it has the electrolytes in it to help. Most sports drinks have too much sugar. I found some italian ice pops at CVS the other day, they are goooood. |

| Normally by this time of the year we are nearing 100 or over every day. But last year and this one have been quite nice. Most days are in upper 90's, but we have had several in upper 80's. NO humidity, though. Which might sound nice if you have to deal with it everyday...but a dry heat like we have here is miserable sometimes. I normally still don't get out in the middle of the afternoon to much. Morning or early evenings are my best times. Of course that coincides with my work day to...he he. Evenings have been almost cold a few nights here lately. I hope it keeps it up!!

| Pye, I am the same way. I can not take the heat. I don't think I have ever had a heat stroke, but had an episode after getting extremely hot when I was a teenager once and now I can't take it at all. Makes me sick.

| My electric bill was $500 this month. Water was $135. Time to cut back. I still owe the electric company $275 from last month! Its been very hot-can't sleep at night without the Central Air on. The refrigerator broke last month cause we didn't have the air on and it worked too hard to keep the food cool and finally stopped trying. Thank God we had a spare in the garage or we'd have lost all our food-which ain't much but we need every bit-if you know what I mean. So glad we have fresh tomatoes and peaches. I had one concord grape vine that came back from last year (Our others died in the drought) and I have to go pick the grapes from it. The blackberries were great too. We have several melons growing-I love them. Few beans. It's been so dry again this year. At least the humidity is low. When I lived in Michigan, an 88 degree heat was as bad as the 100 degree days we have here. Still, I'm losing alot of my plants already. Its very discouraging to watch them die. |

Even Had a Brief StormAbout a whole half an hours worth of rain tonight. I got off work and now its more steamy out here! At least some water for my little plants! I do have 1 rain barrel so that helps, although at times I feel like I should get about 20 to stock up. We have a well so I worry about water since I used to live in town and run it freely. As long as I can have green plants over summer I should not complain right, life is good! Winter here is brown and white, sorry not my kinda colors.

| Right now, my flowerbeds are turning brown. The heat is taking the color right out of my zinnia flowers! They are getting pale and then brown, all at once. They just don't like the heat now. Nothing does. At least you got a bit of rain. Its been four weeks since we got any. One night it rained everywhere but our house! The drought started earlier this year. Usually the rain starts tapering off about this time but its been dry as a bone for such a long time now. Just hope the city doesn't see me watering my plants and give me a ticket on my water bill! I don't think its mandatory restriction yet on outside watering-but I wouldn't be surprised. I've got lots of perennial babies that I don't want to lose cause we are going to move next year and I want the perennials to have a healthy start. Hubby is going to be replacing a roof next week so at least that is one good thing-no likely chance of rain in the forecast for months! |

Creek water or lake/OKNURSEIs it ok to go to a nearby creek or lake and fill milk jugs and take home? Would that water be ok for plants, I don't even no? I'm still a newbie about a lot but I would start thinkin of options to save my favs.

| That's a thought but the creekbeds are all dry and the nearest lake is 5 miles away. It is that lake that our city water comes from-I don't think the city would appreciate my efforts to bypass their restrictions. I can use old dishwater or bathwater but, like i said, its the heat that's getting them. As long as the roots stay watered-the perennials should come back. I'm just losing all the annuals and everything is looking stressed. We do this every year. Its just part of the weather combined with the clay/sand soil that turns to rock in the heat. I use loads of mulch but the heat breaks it down super fast-especially when I water every day. I just can't win. Its like another winter of dying and then in the fall, things will look nice and clean again instead of overgrown and scraggly. Spring and fall are beautiful here-and long. |
