New to Florida

I just relocated to Florida in July 2011 and hope to settle in the next year in the Dunedin/Clearwater area of Florida. Although I did some gardening in Pennsylvania and am familiar with what grows well there, I know very little about Florida. I'm anxious to learn and create a garden paradise where I settle!

Hello and welcome from Huntsville, Alabama.....my husband and I use to live in Tarpon Springs, also in Pinella's County and you are going to love the gardening there.....also make sure you join the "freecycle" "recycle" boards on yahoo....LOTS of people give away plants and bulbs in the EARLY spring when they start cleaning out their stuff....Lots of bromeliads and amarilis and lilies....as a matter of fact, that is how I got all the stuff that I have in my yard now in North Alabama....you will LOVE it and there is always so much to do....we have been home now about 2 years in February and I miss that area soooo bad.....wish I could move back, but there was absolutly no work there....one of the highest unemployment rates in the country....you ENJOY

Donna

Hopes this helps

Hello I also live in Florida. For the best in palm trees try Queen palm trees. They can withstand tempetures down to 15 degrees and give a wide beautiful canopy for shade. For tons of color try crotons. they have so many variations of color.Give them a little shade and watch out. Your neighbors will soon be asking you where you got such beautiful colors from bushes that don't even need to produce flowers. The leaves on the bush are very colorful.
When and if you purchase one make sure to look and take the one that has the most branches in the soil. Chances are you actually have four or five seperate plants. So you can split them up. They root very easlily. just break off a piece and put it in the ground where you want it to grow.Water it to make sure it dosen't dry out. Dont worry if it looks a little droopy for the first few days it will pick up. In three weeks you will see new small leaves start to grow on top and that means it has taken hold.
Good Luck !
