What a glorious specimen!

I'm growing my first astilbe from seed this year and it isn't doing nearly as beautifully. It was a scrawny white flower. Not impressive at all. What do you do to make yours grow so well?. I have mine in full shade-which is like part shade in a cooler zone cause the plants get so much indirect light in the summer here. I haven't amended the soil-just mulched the top and it has a sandy base. Does it need a rich loamy type or wet? I'm thinking I'm definitely not giving it the love it needs. Clue me in.

Astilbe

Hi
I grew my first ones from seed as well.......the first season they looked terrible....I almost plucked them out and threw them away. This year they are quite mature and very pretty. They are in a shaded area that has lots of compost and is kept moist most of the time.
Once established, they should be just fine.
Take care
Gary

Ok Nurse astilbes are acid loving plants and need food. Throw down some coffee grounds and Hollytone and lots of compost. Bet they'll surprise you and be gorgeous. My mom has several planted in a bed along the back of her home and they are quite eye-catching when in full bloom. Love their leaves also. I created a new bed last yr. and thought I had bought a reg. size red one and here it's another dwarf but that's ok, I still love it. They like moisture also. Good luck.

Bought an astilbe on clearance during one of my Lowes escapades! I don't even know what kind it is but can't wait till it blooms. I'm not sure if it will bloom this year - anybody have any thoughts?

Thank You kindly everyone.

Gardenguy yours are sweet .......Is there any other colors>?

Now mine is growning on the south side of my carriage house. Only gets part shade from an apricot tree...I say sun all morning. It is in clay soil, and I didnt do a thing to them.. They seem to like that location.

Mine were all plants ....Someone gave me the small ones maybe 2 years ago, online.....my bigger ones I had some I bought and some given by a sister.

I thought they needed part sun?????

I like the feathery effect. I just put the sawdust there to make the photo show up.

thanks for all the nice words and lookin in on me........I am posting as mine bloom.....I call that sherbert , but dont know the name.

Gary-you read my mind...

Almost did that very thing (I can admit it now that I have someone who understands-hee hee!) I'm going out to Lowes this afternoon-waiting for the kids to get their chores done. Will pick up some more mulch and put some acidic fertilizer on them-gotta sprinkle my rhododendron I bought a few weeks ago too. Its looking pretty sorry and all I can think is the pH is too alkalinic for it cause it was a healthy specimen and has the right elements. Thanks for the info and encouragement!

Astilbe

Hi
The thing about Astilbe is the vibrant colors.
Here is the Red

Here is the White

Here is the Pink

They are also VERY easy to divide once they form a clump (3 seasons).

Anyone ever grow Goats Beard....it is also from the Astilbe Family. This one is 4 1/2 feet tall this season and hasn't bloomed yet. (all photos are last season)

Can anyone tell....I love my Gardens!!!

Garden guy,

Beautiful work there.
Do you think mine is the Red?

Never heard of goats beard.
Are you giving out sample of it?

Perhaps we can trade for something you want?
