QuestionGingers

I've got a bed with several different varieties of ginger growing and flowering. Some of the flowers eventually yield seed pods. Are they worth harvesting? Is it possible that the flowers cross-pollenated and will produce a plant with different flowers than the parent?

The best way to reproduce gingers of any variety is to divide the clumps periodically. This way you get a genetically identical plant. Gingers in the same species may cross pollinate occationally in nature but don't count on that happening in your garden. Gingers of different genera won't cross pollinate at all to the best of my knowledge. Only a specialty grower would have success on cross pollinating gingers in the same species under very controlled conditions.

Thumbs up

OK. Thanks. So there really isn't any reason for me to keep the fruits/seed pods then.

I definitely need to dig up some of the clumps. They are getting quite big now and smothering one of my fig trees!

Hey Bernard, if you have extra white butterfly gingers, I'll be happy to take it off your hands.. Unfortunately, I married a non-gardening techie and he thought the white butterfly rhyzome I left in the brown paper bag in the garage was garbage.. So, if you have any left, I'll be happy to help you out there..

As soon as the weather gets a bit nicer, I will likely be breaking out the shovel on those ginger plants. I'll keep you all posted on how much rhyzome is available.

How I wish I could also join in the ginger fun. Alas. I have never thought of growing gingers here.
What are the best conditions in which to grow them?
(Goodness techies are characters, aren't they.)
