congrats on the flowers! Question- if hollyhocks don't bloom until the second year how do they survive the winter? Dumb question I know but I am confused!?!?!?

flower

They may bloom the first yr if started early. They can grow 4 to 6 ft high, so it takes them a while. They grow like a perennial. They may just grow leaves first year and look half dead over winter, but spring they will begin growing and you will get flowers.Mine are bloomin from last year but I threw seeds around and have babies comin up,but probably won't flower til next yr.

Blooming has nothing to do with winter survival.
It is the roots of he plant that comes back the next year, not the blooms.

My mother's hollyhocks die all the way down every year and come back beautifully the next spring. I am always saying I am going to plant some seed, and haven't yet. Maybe next year. I think they are one of the prettiest flowers!

I don't think you were supposed to send seeds. I have gotten them from my mother a few times and didn't plant them. Thanks for checking though!

Shellee

Get out there and sprinkle those seeds girl! They grow fairly easy also do better I hear with partial light so you don't even have to dig much, So no more excuses get those seeds planted NOW!!! They are very pretty! I have a few that are 6 ft tall I love them, cause my grammy used to grow them. They remind me of her.
