WinkDatura

Is a datura also known as devils trumpet? Opposite of an angel trumpet because they bloom at night? I have never had either before and I just read they are dangerous? The leaves can cause itching and they are poisonous to eveything, some people make hallucinagenic tea. Who has grown these and how are they to grow?

Yes, the flowers of datura point upward towards the sky, the flowers of the brugmansia downward

Both bloom during the day and in my experience the scent is strongest in the evening hours. Daturas to me just smell the first day

I dont' think there is a difference in how to grow them, except if I don't cut off the seeds but let them end up in the compost, I have daturas sprouting all over the yard :/

Brugmansia is angel trumpet. The blooms hang downward and can grow into large trees. Datura are smaller and usually more bushy and the bloom go up. Both blooms look the best at night and early in the morning. Brugmansia smell the best and strongest at night. I grow both and neither are harmful unless you eat them. My dogs and squirrels and other things have bitten them and it didn't hurt them in the least and plenty of insects love them and aren't in the least affected, lol. You can have skin irritation from a number of plants and yes like a lot of other plants can be toxic if injested so as long as you don't plan to eat your plant you will be fine. I handle quite a few every day and none bother me and I have very sensitive skin. Brugmansia take quite a bit more water and fertilizer than datura and you must have more than one in bloom at a time to set seed pods. I believe the datura set seeds no matter what and will reseed themselves easily if you don't remove the seed pods. They are very easy to grow and are pretty and most smell nice. Depending on what zone you are in you can leave angel trumpets in the ground and cut them back and mulch well right before the first frost and make cuttings very easily to share and the original will come back from the roots. The datura can over winter in mild climates or will reseed if left alone most places. They babies are easy to pull up if too many pop up and you can share those as well. As to the tea I wouldn't recommend it. It was used by the native american shaman and religious ceremonies in other countries to produce hallucinations but each plant can vary widely to the amount of drug in them and it would be very easy to overdose and kill yourself experimenting. That is why they got the bad reputation is from people not knowing what they were doing and attempting to get high and dying so like I said., don't eat or drink them and you'll be fine, lol.

I live in zone 6 and a friend of mine grows them every year. They reseed themselves here and come up in the spring, even after the hard freezes and ice storms the we sometimes have. She just pulls the ones she don't want and throws them away. This is my first year for the Brugs. I have two colors now. Just in pots. I want to plant some Datura if my shoulder gets a little better. Would it be to late now to plant them? I hope not. I wanted to get them in the ground sooner. But it kept raining and then I had surgery so I had to put it off.

Both plants are extremely poisonous, so do not let anyone or any pets swallow any parts of the plants.

oleander

oleander is a small shrub that has phlox like blooms, and must be brought inside during the winter.

When I lived in Va. we had oleanders that were over 7 feet tall. The city of Norfolk planted them all over. And alot were right down the medians of highways.

So pretty, but they are poisionous if ingested. One of my favorite books is "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch. Fiction.( just thought I'd throw that in).

Oleander is extremely poisonious, I read somewhere that oleander is one of the most poisonious plants out there! They don't usually grow past zone 6 I think. They get to be huge bushes here in Texas reaching well over 12 feet in height and as big around.

They get at least that big in Hawaii too. They are grown as wind brakes and hedges. Yes very poisonous. When I was a kid my father told me about some people who had died when they used the oleander sticks to roast hot dogs on a camping trip.
I am new to the world of dats but I think different varieties grow at different rates and bloom at different times. I had some dats bloom only two months after I planted the seeds in the greenhouse. The plant was only about 10" tall and the flowers were only about an inch across and inch and a half long. I have that plant in the ground now I'm hoping it will get taller and rebloom. The plants I had last year were twice as big with flowers tree times that size but didn't bloom until late summer.
