| Big Zinnias grow well for me. There are all different sizes, colors and the seeds can be bought just about anywhere. Same with the marigolds that grow 2-3 feet and have large yellow flowers. If you are in a cooler area you will need to get them in the ground pretty quick though so you can enjoy them this summer. Both are continuous bloomers and reseed easily. Morning glories grow from seed and have beautiful flowers but they are a vine and will be invasive if you don't have a trellis or strings from your gutters. Daylilies are pretty cheap or easy to get ahold of and grow like weeds, yet are pretty. If you are in a warmer climate then perennial hibiscus grows well from both seed or root. There is an annual variety that is smaller and more compact but the larger perennial is pretty awesome as well-thats the one I'm talking about growing from seed. Hollyhocks grow from seed but are a little harder to grow that way. I've done it though-just takes a little extra care by growing in containers-maybe next year for you if you have a grow light and a basement. Once they are established, they are perennials. I'm thinking they need a long season to establish from seeds. I could be wrong about that-it's been a while. Good luck. |

| I grow several Dahlias that produce huge flowers, the plants start blooming in spring and continue all season long, and they are long-lasting flowers that are gorgeous in arrangements. ![]() ![]()

Big FlowersZuZu those dahlias are very pretty!!!!!!!!!! I think taht is an annual here in Pa. so I would have to dig them up for winter right? Is that a bulb plant? I think I have bought small ones in the past for my porch and pitched them in the fall. Are they like cannas? I have a couple of those and store in my basement over winter? Thanks! Angie

| Aww Thank you both, so much.
or you'd have to take up the tubers and store them over the winter months, which is what I do, even here in zone 8. They spent the winter nestled in newspaper in a box in my basement. They aren't hard to store, and keep - very much like your Cannas, I expect. If you have ever grown and stored potatoes, you do just the same thing to keep these. ![]() It really is worthwhile to store them, IMHO, the plants just keep getting bigger and sturdier each year. This big red one (the ID is unknown to me I got it in a trade) grows 5 or more feet tall and does need some staking here in my garden ... but then I live in hurricane country. Last year, I planted one of my big Dahlias into a large pot, instead of planting it directly into the garden. We didn't have any hurricanes here last year ( thank God) but we did have a couple of very strong gales, and I was able to lie the pot over on it's side to protect the plant from the high winds. It worked out so well for me that I've done the same thing with all of them this year, the bonus is, they sure will be easy to dig up this year. ![]()

Big FlowersOur neighbor grows a gorgeous red hibiscus and it is spectacular looking when in bloom. The dahlias do have to be dug up for our zone, maybe they can stay in the ground in other zones, I don't know. I store mine in bags of peat moss in our garage and they do just fine. I've been putting mine in pots in sunny areas. My mom has a beautiful garden and she has her dahlias spread thru out in pots and it's really a pretty scene. ![]() |

DahliasI did not get any of those tubers at Lowes yesterday, I suppose I will have to go back and get some while on sale!!!!!!!!!! They do look really pretty, it is a lot of work though in the fall to dig those things up and store for winter! I'm not getting any younger! Angie
